Uganda's Gay 'Witch Hunt' is On as Tabloid Prints List of '200 Top Homos'

Emboldened by President Museveni's signing of the Anti-Homosexuality Act, Uganda's Red Pepper tabloid on Tuesday published a list of 'Uganda's 200 Top Homos'.

Cnn_museveniIt is not the first time the tabloid has done it. Back in October 2010, another tabloid published a similar list and called for death to those listed, inspiring documented attacks on many of those named in the article. It sent many others into hiding.

The consequences for those named in the current list could be far worse given the provisions of the draconian bill Museveni signed this week into law.

The AP reports:

The list included prominent Ugandan gay activists such as Pepe Julian Onziema, who has repeatedly warned that Uganda's new anti-gay law could spark violence against homosexuals. A popular Ugandan hip-hop star as well as a Catholic priest are also on the list.

Few Ugandans identify themselves publicly as gay, and the tabloid's publication of alleged homosexuals recalled a similar list published in 2011 by a now-defunct tabloid that called for the execution of gays. A Ugandan judge later condemned the outing of homosexuals in a country where gays face severe discrimination, saying it amounted to an invasion of privacy. A prominent Ugandan gay activist, David Kato, was killed after that list came out, and activists said at the time that they believed he was targeted because of his work promoting gay rights in Uganda.

And if you care to be sick to your stomach, you can read the full text of Museveni's speech at the signing of the bill HERE.

  4. So they are admitting that being gay is something you are not just something you do. If they thought it was just behavior they wouldn't publish lists like this. It's like they are making being gay a crime retroactively. Otherwise you couldn't use prior behavior like this. It's disgusting.

  5. Imagine if the headline was "top n*****s" or "top y*ds" or "top bi***es" there would be international uproar and accusations that the country was going back to the days of Hitler.

We must all contact our elected representatives wherever we live and push them to keep this disgraceful issue at the forefront of the world's mind.

I predict a pogrom of gays and other "outsiders" within months if this country is allowed to continue its present path.

  6. Let's see, what companies are suporrting this paper with their advertising...St. Augustine International University, Airtel, Umeme.

  7. Greg, I was thinking along the same lines. I'm sure there are also big advertisers not only on this "rag" but also national television and radio who need to hear our voice of protest and the words "international boycott."

  8. And so the Witch hunts begin, or rather go on but this time unabashed, unobstructed and under the ever so agreeable watch of the international community.

Reading this broke my heart for the men and women who will be tortured publicly, raped to be cured, and thrown away in a jail cell because of who they are. And of course, as it is always with acts of hatred and unjust prosecution, someone with a vengeful private agenda will go to this despicable rag under the guise of journalism, and out a man or a woman who may or may not be gay, just for the hateful disturbing heck of it.... Come to think of it, on my last visit to Uganda, there were murmurs of President Museveni liking his partners on the male side. Someone please send it to this news rag and let them know about the wolf among them.

See how he likes the full application of his own law, and how great his life will be when prosecuted for who he is.

  9. This is a White House petition. It needs 100 more signatures to reach 150. At that point it is automatically posted to the public on the White House petition webpage. If it gets 100,000 signatures in a month the White House has to post a public response to it. I know they are making statements but this forces them to put something in writing and 100,000 signatures sends a strong message we are going to make Uganda a long term issue. Share it on Facebook. If it or another petition doesn't go viral it will never reach 100,000 signatures.

  11. What CAN I do? Sure, I'll sign petitions. But what else?

  12. In an ideal world all LGBT people would be airlifted out of Uganda and the place then bombed all to hell.

  13. These sick bastards make the Taliban look sane. If the US ever sends another dime to these "good Christians" in darkest Africa we should be called out and shamed on the world stage for despicable collaboration.

  14. Call the White House and call all your state's members of Congress JD. That's a start.

  16. JD. Demand that swift action be taken by the US Government. Get your friends to do the same. Put pressure on companies doing business there. The best way is to bleed them dry of money. But we must also find a way to protect those at risk in the process

  17. Ah Africa... so civilized! One has to wonder how many millions of years it would have taken for these Einsteins to have come up with one modern invention: the car? the bicycle? electric light bulb? the wheel???
you name it...I think all of Africa would never have developed beyond the iron age, if that. Agreed? Seems like it's hard to refute!

  18. Since I posted earlier, I have written to my member of parliament here in London including a link to this Towleroad article. I have asked him to raise the issue of an imminent pogrom against gays in Uganda and reminded him of the failure to stop similar violence in Yugoslavia and Rwanda in the 1990s.

Please encourage everyone to contact their elected representatives and inform them of the anti gay lynchings about to start in Uganda. Demand that they raise it in their assemblies and seek sanctions.

Also press the mainstream media (esp. TV) to cover the issue and the persecution being stirred up.

I fear we are only weeks away from public lynchings of gay men and women in Uganda, pray that I and other posters here are wrong.

These are our people being hunted and attached.

  19. Disgusting and horrible. My heart aches for the victims of this attack.

However, I am intrigued by the boy's claim that the pastor "raptured his 'bunu.'" My pervy imagination runs wild...

  20. Comparing Museveni to Hitler is a stretch. Hitler was unspeakably evil, but intelligent and competent at pursuing his agenda. Museveni is a semi-literate buffoon who sounds stupider every time he opens his mouth.

  21. Please sign the White House petition to stop all American monies from going to Uganda. Currently there are 58 signatures and 150 is needed to get it to appear in public on the White House webpage. Show your power. Go here:

We CAN do this! Invite your friends to sign the petition.

  22. Dan Cobb,

Go screw yourself, you racist jerk. Towleroad has how many articles about white Christian Americans trying to deny the rights of gay Americans? Too many to count.

People like you are pathetic. You ignore the violent and lethal activities of white people in North America and Europe against gays but happily take time to make snide racist comments when people's lives are on the line.

Newsflash: White European colonial powers who ruled African countries instituted anti-gay laws across the continent. More recently, anti-gay Evangelical Christians have been fomenting anti-gay hate. If you weren't such a bigot you would notice the stories on Towleroad about Scott Lively and his ilk.

How many gay American teens still commit suicide in the US because of bullying? How many gay American youths are homeless because their parents threw them out? How many American states still have no laws to protect against workplace and housing discrimination? (A majority!)

    Screw you, bigot.

  24. How about we get some of our more proficient Photoshoppers to give us some nice and juicy XXX rated pics of President Museveni and select members of his government? Get it published as if it's real news, make the rounds, and wait for their names to pop up on one of these "lists". Hunter becomes the hunted kind of thing.

Maybe I've been watching too much House of Cards.

  25. Towerload, Please please tell us what to do in order to help stop this utterly disgusting and perverse inhumanity towards all these innocent civilians. An article, a petition or a cause or a link might be able to help the thousands lgbts in this forsaken country even just a little bit. This is like the start of a Holocaust. Are we just going to watch as these people murder and quote unqoute "burn" our lgbt brothers in that country?
    With all my heart, Landon.
