AIDS Drops Off List of Top Ten Causes of Death in NYC for First Time Since Epidemic Exploded

1983For the first time since 1983, AIDS is no longer listed among the top ten causes of death in NYC, according to Health Commissioner Mary Bassett.

The NYDN reports

In 2011, it was the number nine killer, with 766 deaths. That number dropped to 609 for 2012, according to statistics released last month...City officials say better treatment is allowing New Yorkers with AIDS to live longer.

“It’s a tribute to the efforts that have been made...in tackling this epidemic. We are seeing some success,” Bassett said at a City Council budget hearing.

Bassett said the number of new HIV infections in the city is steady or declining each year unlike other areas of country which are seeing a rise in new infections between men who have sex with men.

  1. Unfortunately this will just lull the complacent NY gays into a state of false security, and will ultimately lead them to forego condom usage.

  2. Yeah, if guys over 30 turn you off, you're much less likely to get AIDS. Who said Grindr wasn't worth it's weight in gold?

  3. Wow, anon, grindr, eh? Good luck with that foolproof safe sex strategy.

  4. Thanks for including the historic poster from 1983 as an illustration. Powerful memories of a very scary, seemingly hopeless time in our history.

  5. Yippee. And tons of guys under 35 still drown in meth and do bareback hookups because a handful of pills cures everything. NOT.

  6. And yet people still get infected.

  7. This is certainly an encouraging stat, but still not a free pass to random barebacking. Protect yourself people!! As a 48yo life long NYC'er I was 18 when AIDS hit the city hard. I've never NOT known anything but having AIDS over our heads. Hoping we are under a decade for finding a final cure. Thank you for included this AIDS March poster. Those were dark times. NO ONE cared whether we lived or died.

  9. rates of HIV infection among young gay men are skyrocketing...especially young MSM of color. also, trans women are being badly affected...possibly trans men as well, except there's no data for them!

ACT UP NY has uncovered a great deal of squishiness in City and State stats on this issue, and we have commenced a broad Prevention campaign.

Condoms or PrEP or TasP or Seropositioning or Partner Limitation or Safer Acts or Abstinence?

YES, any or all of the above...a la carte. COMBINATION PREVENTION has always been what's kept most people negative, that and sheer LUCK.

not much good has come out of being a brownshirt about any one Prevention tool. don't expect that to change. ;-)
