Lance Bass and Fiancé Michael Turchin Talk About Changing Mississippi Hearts and Minds on Marriage: VIDEO

Turchin_bass

Lance Bass and his fiancé Michael Turchin talk about their love for the state of Mississippi and changing hearts and minds in a new video for Southerns for the Freedom to Marry.

Says Bass:

"When we go out as a gay couple here in Mississippi. You don't feel what everyone says is going on down here in the South. People accept it so much better and they just see 'oh, that's cool. we like them together. They're really sweet.' We feel the love coming from them anyway, and the support. We just have to show them what being gay is. And that's being completely normal, and nothing different from that straight marriage over there."

  2. My husband and I live in a smallish (20,000) town in Louisiana. I'm a teacher and he's a therapist. I feel like we're doing our part to advance equality simply by living somewhere other than a "gay ghetto" in a major city. Our friends, co-workers, employers, students and neighbors all know we're a gay couple, and while we encounter some low-grade homophobia from time to time, we generally have a pretty nice life.

  3. It's disappointing that so many people here are unable to look past stereotypes. In general, we get irate when straight people believe stereotypes about gay people. Why is it okay to assume that all Southerners are homophobic?

As Clayton notes, it's not always bad here in the South. And Sam writes, many of the most recent hate crimes have happened in liberal bastions like New York City.

  6. Nice overall video but has he seen recent polls? Outside of the college towns, Mississippi is NOT cool with gay marriage. Make.No.Mistake. It is NOT cool in MS.
