NYC Cardinal Timothy Dolan Says 'Bravo' to Michael Sam for Coming Out: VIDEO

Dolan

NYC Cardinal Timothy Dolan appears on Meet the Press tomorrow and will talk about the church's sexual abuse scandal, and also gay football players.

Dolan, who claims to not be "anti-anybody", has equated same-sex marriage to incest, denied LGBT Catholics entry to mass, and insisted LGBT individuals are entitled to friendship, not marriage. Last year he vehemently opposed same-sex marriage legislation in New York state, calling it a "communist threat" and has since complained that he felt burned by lawmakers. In May Dolan issued a memo to LGBT Catholics urging them to "pray, fast, and sacrifice" over the Supreme Court's upcoming decisions on marriage.

But Dolan is happy for out NFL-hopeful Michael Sam

“The same Bible that tells us, that teaches us, well about the virtues of chastity and the virtue of fidelity and marriage also tells us not to judge people,” Dolan said. “So I would say, ‘Bravo.’”

  2. whichever way the wind is blowing in rome...
that's dolan. not a guy who feels anything very deeply.
    he's just a blow-hard, talking head.
so, i'll take it. at least some bishops are being a little effected by francois.

  3. Bravo, tim b. No one else need bother commenting. That just summed it up perfectly...

  4. Translation: "I'm not judging you, but you have to be celibate and not get gay married or you're going to hell"

  5. Bravo Tim B and WOODY.
May I add - "if I am a good boy - maybe I'll be elected pope or stay out of jail."

  6. woody: Well, at least he seems able to read instructions, other cardinals are doing the Pope no favour with all their talking

  7. I don't know. My initial reaction to hearing Dolan's remarks was: "Ugh!" Not sure why I reacted that way. Maybe it was watching this antigay church man, dressed up all fancy like in his black robes with red beanie and piping, bringing up The Bible.

  8. he's no gay icon

  9. This dude has just enough power to be dangerous!

  10. He is just a Greek bearing a gift.....

Our rights are not predicated on anyone supporting us; I'm still suspicious of those who have 'evolved' so conspicuously, those who kept quiet at Sochi, those who still allow discrimination against teachers in private schools and especially I'm suspicious of the two faced Jesuits....of whom the Pope is one.

The Jesuits have revoked toleration before; where is their battle cry now to take the phrase "intrinsically defective" used to describe us out of their precious Catechism ?

Where is anyone in the Catholic Church loudly hammering the reformist 95 theses on to the door at Whittenberg ?
None of them have an ounce of courage. And Dolan above is just an institutionalized tool.

  11. It's actually a sobering thought that there were more brave dedicated reformist churchmen around in the 1500's than there are now.

For this putrid church this is the worst of times, it's all just sham and no backbone, it's truly lost.

  12. the holy Eucharist is laced with some kind of drug that brain washes people. it's religious blotter acid.

  13. Don't tell me the gay rights movement hasn't had an impact on the Catholic Church. It would have been unthinkable for NY Cardinals Spellman or Cooke in their day to have said "Bravo!" about a man publicly announcing that he is homosexual. This is groundbreaking stuff. Rather than criticize Cardinal Dolan I think we need to continue to dialogue with him.

  14. Ronan having a dialogue with the pope might do some good. Cardinal Dolan on the other hand is a lost cause. His previous anti gay actions have proven that,

  15. "Last year he vehemently opposed same-sex marriage legislation in New York state, calling it a "communist threat" and has since complained that he felt burned by lawmakers."

No, Andy Towle, he didn't say this last year. Marriage equality didn't pass in NY last year. It was 3 years ago. Towle is just cutting and pasting at this point.

  16. We've won. The Church as lost Cardinal Dolan desperately wants to be liked.

  17. If we find this " Bravo" is 'groundbreaking' then we have become truly craven.

    Posted by: JackFknTwist | Mar 8, 2014 3:32:57 PM

  18. Dolan is not to be trusted
he is nothing but a big blowhard sucking up to the Pope, who, I believe, he personally despises....not as much as he despises his own closeted gay ass

    Posted by: bill | Mar 8, 2014 3:54:14 PM

  19. He must be feeling vertigo he's had to change his patter so often since "that Jesuit" took over!

And now he's not into Judging? My, my how far the high and mighty of the Catholic Church have fallen!

Used to be you could climb the Catholic corporate ladder by mumbling your prayers, waving your hand in the air and keeping a dour expression on your face. Now you practically have to perform circus tricks just to keep up with the new leader. And smile while you do it. Must burn.

  20. A political animal. Just don't give him any rights.

  21. Location: A movie theater, two people are watching previews...

He: The Catholic Church is evil and must be destroyed.

    She: Everybody knows that.

He: Yeah but did you know that the Catholic Church REALLY IS evil and must be destroyed?

    She: I think you're right.

  22. Dolan is a disgusting, homophobic pig.

    Posted by: Richard | Mar 8, 2014 5:35:46 PM

  23. Yeah, sounds like he's trying to make good with the new Pope in charge by seeming less rigid.

    Posted by: Factoids | Mar 8, 2014 6:07:33 PM

  24. It also explains why the pope might not be progressing on gay rights as fast as one would like, even if he would like to. When you have a group of trained seals who have to squawk in unison, you can't change the routine too quickly because the seals won't be able to keep up.
