AIDS Memorial Defaced In Oak Lawn, Dallas: VIDEO

Oak lawns dallas legacy of love monument

A monument in Oak Lawn, Dallas, which has become a gathering place for LGBT rallies, protests, and vigils, has been defaced with the tag “666” in red paint.

Named for an endowment started by Dallas resident Donna Fishel, the 35-foot Legacy of Love monument includes plaques inscribed for people who supported its building, were historically significant in the neighborhood or died of AIDS. Fishel and others had donated money on behalf of Friedhelm Schnitzler and Heinz Reifferscheid, partners for more than 25 years both of whom died of AIDS.

Along with the Legacy Of Love monument, the Cathedral of Hope which has a large lesbian and gay membership, and the buildings that house the Dallas Observer, were also targeted with the same graffiti.

Speaking to Dallas News, Brenda Marks, the president of Oak Lawn Committee, a neighborhood group responsible for maintaining the Legacy of Love monument, said that the intentional damage hurts more than various repairs carried out after car crashes because the “666” symbol is “the mark of the devil on a monument that’s dedicated to those who have lost their lives to AIDS.”

Marks, who along with other volunteers spent Sunday afternoon cleaning the monument, said they may have the monument sandblasted if the paint fails to come off.

  2. How do we not know this is another hoax? Most of these hate crimes stories featured on this site as of late have turned out to be hoaxes. 666 seems like half-hearted tomfoolery at best. I really don't see it is as homophobic as much as it a cry for attention. Gay people begging for attention isn't something new, to be bluntly honest.

  4. Sad. People are so fearful of what they don't know and don't understand, and of course they've been taught to be that way.

  5. I hadn't connected MaryM to Rick up until now. At least, change some of the words Rick.

  7. Christians, Muslims, or Religious Jews, exercising their "first amendment" rights?!

@RICK/MARYM Trolls lying about the reality of anti-gay oppression isn't something new, to be bluntly honest...

  8. @marym Sure, and Kennedy is not really dead but living in Area 51. The simplest explanation is that Dallas has again lived up to its name: the City of Hate. Thanks Texas Christians for promoting hate. You are probably right about everything because magical baby Jesus told you so.

  10. @RICK, The burden of proof is on YOU, you stupid sack of s***!

PROVE that "most of these hate crimes stories featured on this site as of late have turned out to be hoaxes."

PROVE that "666 seems like half-hearted tomfoolery..."

PROVE that this is "...a cry for attention" and not an act of homophobia.

    PROVE IT

    We're waiting...

  11. The most important part of this story is that both the monument and the cathedral were targeted. They are two miles apart, and to go to both locations smacks of more than just bored kids defacing property.

  13. 666 is for and about Muslims, the jihadist kind for whom it is appropriate.

  14. "the mark of the devil"

If you read the Bible objectively, the devil is the good guy.

  15. See, tbis why we can't have nice things. I don't think it's Christians, it's anyone who thought they could, with impunity, attack multiple public sites. They'll be csught, this city (Dallas) is appropriately upset, silly out-of-towner comments herein to the contrary and this will possibly bring some focus to at least the AIDS memorial, which usually suffers neglect, needs weeding and some TLC. I hauled two bags of refuse outa there last week.
