Cinderfella, A Gay Equality Fairy Tale Pop Musical: VIDEO

Cinderfella

Season 9 American Idol contestant Todrick Hall pulled together an energetic retelling of the Cinderella fairy tale with a gay twist and a few other Disney characters thrown in for good measure.

Writes Hall: "I wanted to tell this famous fairy tale in a new and innovative way, combining familiar top 40's songs with classic Disney melodies. This story speaks volumes and I think that love is as classic as this fairy tale. It's time for us to legalize love in all shapes and colors."

The video features a colorful cast of characters including Lance Bass as Prince Charming, Janice Dickinson as the evil stepmother, Shangela and Willam Belli as the stepsisters, plus Glozell as the Fairy Godmother, Kimberly Cole as Jasmine, and Aubrey O’Day as Alice.

Gay Days Makes A Mint; Visitors Bureau Takes Note

ImagesToday's the second-to-last day of Gay Days in Orlando, and despite the best efforts of the Florida Family Association, people seem to be enjoying themselves.

That includes Orlandian business people, who will make a mind-numbing amount of money off Gay Days' red-shirted revelers this year.

From Orlando's CFNews13:

A sea of red shirts took over Walt Disney World's Main Street to celebrate Gay Days.

Travel groups say the more red you see, the more green the city makes.

People keep coming back year after year. Drew Ladochi and his friends travelled from Chicago and a few years ago he decided he loved Orlando so much he bought a time share here.

"We've been partying all weekend and now it's Magic Kingdom today and Epcot tomorrow," Ladochi said.

The "Gay Days" events are not put on by the theme parks but the people are welcomed along with anyone else who wants to visit. Orlando Gay Travel.com estimates the theme parks make more than $13 million this weekend alone.

The estimate could be conservative. According to CFNews, Gay Days' organizers guess their celebration brings up to 150,000 people to town, who spend the great bulk of their money at the local theme parks.

Orlando's tourism bureau, Visit Orlando, this year began promoting Gay Days for the first time after ignoring the event for two decades. The years-long snubbing is understandable, Central Florida being historically gay-unfriendly, and might have continued indefinitely if the gays didn't bring so much money to town. The Orlando Sentinel has published a story on the bureau's evolution, which now seeks to target LGBT visitors year-round:

For the first time in its history, the publicly subsidized convention-and-visitors bureau has a page on its website targeting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender visitors. It is working with a gay-oriented marketing agency to attract more German tourists, and it recently spent $3,500 on a national print advertisement aimed at the LGBT market, in cooperation with other tourism-promotion groups.

"We have continued to grow our presence in that market," said Danielle Courtenay, Visit Orlando's chief marketing officer. "It is certainly a market out there that Orlando can continue to benefit from."

... Visit Orlando, which gets the majority of its funds from Orange County government, has kept the gay market at arm's length even though Orlando hosts one of gay travel's biggest and most successful events: Gay Days. The weeklong festival, founded in Orlando two decades ago, has done more than perhaps anything else to put the nation's theme-park capital on the gay-travel map.

... Former Orange County Commissioner Linda Stewart said she agrees ... [that the] visitor's bureau has not done enough to go after the LGBT market. But Stewart said she senses change is coming.

"They are starting to see the dollar signs and the need to be more involved, both internationally and nationally," she said. "This should have been done long ago."

The arc of history is long, but it bends towards ... profit?

Disneyland Tokyo Opens Its Doors to Gay Wedding Ceremonies

Tokyo_disneyland

The Magic Kingdom just got a little more magic in Japan, the Taipei Times reports:

Tokyo Disneyland said this week it would allow gay couples to hold ceremonies on its grounds, although same-sex weddings have no legal status in Japan.

Disneyland’s decision came to light after Koyuki Higashi, a 27-year-old woman, inquired about marrying her female partner, identified only as Hiroko, at the resort. Higashi was initially told she would be able to marry her partner provided they were dressed “like a man and a woman,” she wrote on her blog. Staff at Disneyland, which attracts about 14 million visitors a year, were apparently concerned about how other visitors would react to the sight of couples both dressed in wedding dresses or tuxedos.

A spokeswoman for Milial Resort Hotels, a subsidiary of Tokyo Disney Resort, later said there had been a misunderstanding, telling Higashi and her partner they could dress how they pleased, although they would not be able to exchange vows in the chapel because of “Christian teachings.”

The park is now accepting all applications for same-sex wedding ceremonies.

Disney to Allow Its Employees to Grow Beards

The Walt Disney Company is chilling out a bit:

Disneyland announced that it's loosened up its legendary dress code — known as the Disney Look — to allow employees to grow more facial hair. But the rules still forbid visible tattoos, body piercings (other than the ears for women), "extreme" hairstyles or colors. (Shaved heads are OK for men, but a no-go for women.)

Beginning Feb. 3, employees can show up to work with a beard or a goatee without worry, as long as it is shorter than a quarter of an inch. Soul patches are still not allowed.

"Disney Look guidelines are periodically reviewed in relation to industry standards, as well as the unique environment of our theme parks and resorts," Betsy Sanchez, a Disneyland Resorts spokeswoman, said in a statement. "While we are careful to maintain our heritage and the integrity of our brand, a recent review of our guidelines led to a decision that an update was appropriate at this time."

Under the new rules, Captain Jack Sparrow would still be fired.

Anti-Gay Group Flies Gay Day 'Warning' Over Disney World

Banner

A conservative group in Florida has made it their mission to "warn" the people of Orlando about today's annual Gay Day at Disney World. The hateful Florida Family Association (FFA) says that gays and lesbians lead "immoral lifestyles" and has spent $7,000 to fly banners that read "Warning Gay Day at Disney 6/4" over Orlando for two full days.

From the FFA site:

"Florida Family Association wants to warn these families about this offensive event before they arrive at the Magic Kingdom on Saturday.  This airplane banner is our best effort to accomplish that goal...Florida Family Association has asked Disney officials to require Gay Day to be held after hours, like Grad Night or Night of Joy, to avoid offending unsuspecting families who traveled thousands of miles expecting a normal day."

The bigoted group currently has looped video of the flyover playing on the home page of its site. They are also urging a ridiculous boycott of the Doubletree by Hilton, the official hotel for Gay Day because The FFA believes they are "sanctioning the celebration of the homosexual, lesbian and transgender lifestyles."

Earlier this year, the FFA called for a boycott of MTV’s Degrassi: The Next Generation for featuring a transgender character on the show.

James Marsden prays for his career in "Hop."

 JakesourceIN THEATERS

After James Marsden's spirited double in 2007, when he so spoofed the Prince Charming template with abandon in Enchanted "116th and Broadway!" and lept into Hairspray's insanely spirited song & dance, you'd think James Marsden had a bright future in comedy ahead of him. But playing straight man to a CGI bunny with a yen for rock and roll in HOP? Is this really where exceeding expectations about your charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent should put you? Hollywood is a cruel place.
