President Obama Addresses 'Cowardly' Navy Yard Shooting: VIDEO

Navyyard

President Obama today addressed the horrific mass shooting that took place this morning at the Washington Navy Yard. At least 12 people are dead so far, including a gunman.

Said Obama:

"We still don’t know all the facts, but we do know that several people have been shot and some have been killed. So we are confronting yet another mass shooting and today it happened on a military installation in our nation's capital...These are men and women who were going to work, doing their job, protecting all of us. They are patriots and they know the dangers of serving abroad, but today they faced unimaginable violence that they wouldn’t have expected here at home."

The Washington Post reports:

The dead shooter had an assault rifle and a handgun, two law enforcement officials said. One said he also had a shotgun. The officials said police are working under the theory that there may be additional shooters because of witness accounts and surveillance video. One of those officials also said all the weapons were not accounted for.
At least two police officers were among those shot.

The NYT adds:

Investigators were trying to determine whether any of the suspected gunmen had official access to the Navy Yard. The site is protected by a high wall, with entry through checkpoints that require official identification. However, under the “force protection status” that was believed to have been in effect early Monday, someone with official access to the site could have driven a car into the parking lot without having the trunk inspected, or could have entered on foot without a bag being searched.

Congress has recessed for the day because of the shooting. Flights at Reagan National Airport were briefly halted, and ten schools in the area have been placed on lockdown.

Man Shot With BB Gun At St. Pete's Pride In Florida: VIDEO

Cornelius Davis mugshot

The Second Amendment was in full-force at Pride parades this weekend. In St. Petersburg, FL a man was shot with a BB gun by 20-year-old Cornelius Davis, and was apparently motivated by anti-gay animus. Tampa Bay Times reports:

After shouting gay slurs, authorities say, a man shot a spectator on his way to Saturday's St. Pete Pride parade in the leg with a BB gun in what organizers describe as the first violent incident in the event's 11-year history.

[...]

According to a police report, Davis yelled a derogatory term for gay people at the man and a group of friends who were walking to the parade. He yelled that they should "put some clothes on" and that "this is a disgrace, there are kids around here," according to the report.

Davis was quickly arrested, and the unnamed victim suffered only minor injuries that did not require hospitalization. This, on the same day that San Francisco Pride suffered its own shooting incident whose two victims did require hospitalization, one of whom underwent surgery.

The shooting victim talks about the incident and wants Davis charged with a hate crime, AFTER THE JUMP...

Gay Gun Control Advocate Mark Glaze, NYC Mayor Bloomberg Targeted with Ricin Letters: VIDEO

Glaze_bloomberg

Mark Glaze, the gay director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the largest gun violence prevention group in the country, and NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the co-chair of the group, were sent letters containing the deadly poison Ricin.

Bloomberg's letter was opened at a NYC mail center and police officers who came into contact with the letter were sent to the hospital as a precaution. Glaze opened his letter, but was not injured by its contents, the NYT reports:

Both letters were identical in content, bore references to the debate over gun regulation and contained written threats to Mayor Bloomberg, Mr. Browne said. “It’s threatening, and it’s very clearly about one issue,” one official said of the letters.

Both letters had a Louisiana postmark, said one official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is continuing. Earlier, Mr. Browne said that “something about the way it was addressed” raised suspicion about the letter sent to New York.

A spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, J. Peter Donald, confirmed that the bureau was investigating the letters, but declined to comment further.

The letters contained a “pink, orange oily substance,” Mr. Browne said, which tested positive for ricin on Wednesday at the National Bioforensic Analysis Center in Maryland. Earlier tests, performed locally, also indicated ricin, Mr. Browne said.

Crowds at a live TV taping featuring actor Christopher Waltz scattered after a man fired a handgun, the Guardian reports:

"The bodyguards jumped over the barriers into the crowd and pulled him [the suspect] to the ground. The police arrived and told everyone to run because there was a grenade in his hand," one eyewitness told Reuters.

French authorities, who arrested the man at the scene, confirmed he was carrying a dummy grenade and a knife. A police source said: "It really appears to be a crazy guy."

Live footage showed actors and film crew scrambling from the seaside stage. The programme was taken off air temporarily, but continued minutes later after the programme's producer said: "The show must go on."

Gun Created with 3-D Printer Fires Its First Shot: VIDEO

Gun-

Last week, Forbes reported that Cody Wilson, a 25-year-old Universtity of Texas law student and founder of the non-profit group Defense Distributed, had created the world's first entirely 3-D printable handgun and planned to release the CAD blueprint files required to make it online.

GunWilson yesterday released a video of the gun being fired.

Forbes adds that Wilson's project has made him one of the most controversial figures in the 3-D printing community:

Once the file is online, anyone will be able to download and print the gun in the privacy of their garage, legally or not, with no serial number, background check, or other regulatory hurdles. “You can print a lethal device,” Wilson told me last summer. “It’s kind of scary, but that’s what we’re aiming to show.”

Since it was founded last August, Wilson’s group has sought to make as many components of a gun as possible into printable blueprints and to host those controversial files online, thwarting gun laws and blurring the lines between the regulation of firearms and information censorship. So far those pieces have included high capacity ammunition magazines for AR-15s and AK-47s, as well as an AR lower receiver, the body of that semi-automatic rifle to which off-the-shelf components like a stock and barrel can be attached.
