Celebrating the Fall of Prop 8 with the SF Gay Men's Chorus: VIDEO

Writes videographer Sean Chapin:

Moments after Prop 8 fell and the first same-sex couple wed in San Francisco City Hall, the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus celebrated the marriage of Prop 8 Plaintiffs Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, singing to then an excerpt of a new song called "San Francisco" from Andrew Lippa's oratorio "I Am Harvey Milk", world-premiered by the chorus days before in its 35th anniversary concert Harvey Milk 2013. Also seen with the newlywed couple are San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, Human Rights Campaign President and Founder of the American Federation for Equal Rights Chad Hunter Griffin, Oscar-winning Producer Bruce Cohen and Oscar-winning Screenwriter for the movie "Milk" Dustin Lance Black. The chorus also sings "Give 'Em Hope", complemented by footage of the day when Prop 8 fell inside City Hall and that afternoon in the Castro neighborhood, as well as the wedding of Kris Perry and Sandy Stier.

On Harvey Milk Day, Activists Remind Us That His Words are More Powerful Than Ever: VIDEO

Videographer and activist Sean Chapin, along with Andrea Shorter, Randall Mann, Sister Roma, Courtney Walsh, and Aaron Wimmer, produced a powerful reading of Harvey Milk's famous "Hope" speech at the top of the Castro in honor of today, Harvey Milk Day in California.

Walsh and Wimmer are two actors from Dear Harvey, the recent New Conservatory Theater play about Milk's life, Mann is a local poet and winner of the 2003 Kenyon Review Prize in Poetry,Sister Roman is a 20 year veteran of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and Shorter is a  lesbian political consultant who serves on the city's Commission on the Status of Women.

Chapin writes:

"What came to be called 'The Hope Speech' was initially conceived as a stump address, wherein Milk attempted to embolden a strong GLBTQ nationalism within the Castro, while also appealing for an alliance with other disenfranchised groups and straight folks," wrote Jason Edward Black and Charles E. Morris III in their anthology An Archive of Hope: Harvey Milk's Speeches and Writings (University of California Press, 2013). Milk would revise the speech and recite it several more times at various appearances, according to the introduction written by Black and Morris to the version they included in their book. It was a defiant speech about gay self-acceptance that included Milk's call for LGBT people to come out of the closet and inspire others to do so. For as Milk said, particularly of LGBT youth, "And you have to give them hope. Hope for a better world. Hope for a better tomorrow. Hope for a place to go if the pressures at home are too great. Hope that all will be alright."

Milk would have been 83-years-old today.

Activist: The SF 49ers Need to Answer Questions About What Went Down with Their 'It Gets Better' Video

Sean Chapin, the activist behind the petition that convinced the San Francisco 49ers to be the first NFL team to make an 'It Gets Better' video, says the team needs to address the remarks made by linebacker Ahmad Brooks and nose tackle Isaac Sopoaga last week in the days before the Super Bowl.

Since Brooks and Sopoaga participated in the 49ers 'It Gets Better' video last year, reporters figured they would have an interesting perspective on the Chris Culliver story, but a new controversy arose when Brooks and Sopoaga both denied participating in the video, and then, when they were shown it, said they never knew it had anything to do with gays, and then appeared to want to distance themselves from it.

Their remarks led Dan Savage to pull the video from the 'It Gets Better' site. Savage then tweeted: "We've removed the #49ers #ItGetsBetter video from our website. #homophobia #NFL #horsesh*t"

Sean Chapin And The Leffews Convince Voter To 'Marry Them': VIDEO

Our favorite chanteur Sean Chapin released another original pro-equality song today, this one a piano ballad about a man who reconsiders his opposition to same-sex nuptials after meeting The Leffews, the family at the center of Chapin's "I Have Two Fathers".

This track is called "Marry Them" and is aimed specifically at people in the four states voting on marriage equality next month: Maine, Maryland, Washington and Minnesota.
