Writer Michael Holloway Perrone has sent his gay novel, A Time Before Me, and a shovel to Alabama lawmaker Gerald Allen who filed a bill in December to ban literary works with gay or bisexual characters. When asked how those books might be destroyed, Allen replied “I guess we dig a big hole and dump them in and bury them.”
“If Mr. Allen is determined to bury such great works as The Color Purple, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Brideshead Revisited, then I would be honored to have my own work buried with such classics. Mr. Allen can use the shovel I sent him to start digging his hole,” said Perrone, a Los Angeles-based writer from Mississippi.
The bill is expected to go to the legislature this session.
