Hacker group Anonymous says it will take down Facebook on November 5, 2011, which also happens to be Guy Fawkes Day.
Says a video posted on YouTube in mid-July: ""Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so they can spy all the people from all around the world…If you are a willing hacktivist or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill facebook for the sake of your own privacy."
One international security specialist said the threat is likely a hoax, the International Business times reported:
"The news around #Anonymous to attack #Facebook on Nov 5 most probably is fake," tweeted Eugene Kaspersky, an information security specialist.
The news was picked up by media outlets just yesterday, though it first appeared on July 16 when a newly created YouTube channel FacebookOp uploaded the video "Message from Anonymous: Operation Facebook, Nov 5 2011." The manifesto urges the audience to kill Facebook on account of privacy.
Kaspersky warned web users to "pay attention to the strange Twitter name they used and links to websites with adverts."

UPDATE: It's all apparently just a big misunderstanding.
