Since her debut album Baduizm in 1997, Erykah Badu has continually reinvented herself, spanning from her head-turning fashion to the breadth of musical genres she touched. Her Grammy-winning debut single, 'On and On', remains a personal favorite of mine. Diskobeistet adds an uptempo beat to this R&B classic, with some slight tropical, balearic backing for a perfect poolside feeling.
As we wait patiently on Miami Horror's follow up to 2010's brilliant effort, Illumination, they've released a remix of one of their new tracks, 'Colors In The Sky', by Brooklyn's Chrome Canyon. It's futuristic and sultry, just as you'd expect from the group.
Talkbox is a Brazilian deep house producer whose has been churning out the slick tunes consistently this year. His latest, 'Get Together', is a beautiful, vocally-driven track that is again perfect for warm weather listening
It's always a bold move to remix, or 'refix' classic house songs, and do it well. Applebottom yet again has done such a feat, remixing C&C Music Factory's 'Let's Get Funkee' in a new refix called 'Hey You People'.
Tad featured former LCD Soundsytem/The Juan MacLean member Nancy Whang's new original single 'Like An Eagle' last month. She's back with another new track with Bonar Bradberry – this one a cover of Donna Summer's 'Working The Midnight Shift".
This week's calendar in NYC:
Red Bull Music Academy is celebrating the life and music of house music legend Larry Levan with a block party on the street that the famous Paradise Garage was once located. Levan's fellow Garage DJs François K., David DePino and Joey Llanos will be playing classics in homage to the late legend. More details can be found here.
After you stop by the Larry Levan block party, come by Le Bain at The Standard, High Line as Occupy The Disco's popular tea dance, Paradisco, has it's spring season finale as we go on break for the summer. You'll hear many of the tracks we post here on Towleroad, and get to enjoy the unique indoor and outdoor space and views Le Bain has to offer. See our site for more information.
The OXD Mirror is a weekly music column brought to you by the boys of OCCUPY THE DISCO (OXD), a New York City based collective created by three music lovers, Ru Bhatt, Josh Appelbaum, and Tad Haes, who want to share their love for disco, house and dance music with the world.
OCCUPY THE DISCO (OXD) curates and recommends music events to the gay community in NYC—in an effort to move the focus of the nightlife scene beyond the promoter and venue and to the music itself. OXD's goal is to educate, entertain, engage and empower the gay audience to reclaim their ability to question and experience the unknown. The OXD Mirror will serve to showcase tunes that are definitely off-the-beaten-path but rightfully deserve the attention of the gay ear.
Be sure to check out these tracks and more on our Spotify Playlist. For more information on OXD, check out our website and accompanying blog at www.occupythedisco.com, like us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter: @OccupyTheDisco.
