Setting a first for San Diego this week, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer hoisted rainbow Pride flags over the city's Gaslamp Quarter, placing the last two of the 124 total flags himself.
The flags were to celebrate the 40th anniversary of San Diego Pride and were accompanied by a brief ceremony at 5th Ave. and L St. Steven Whitburn of San Diego LGBT Pride extolled on how far rights and acceptance have come over 40 years before handing off the proceedings to Faulconer, a republican(!), who expressed his own pride at being able to stand with "people who openly fight for acceptance and equality."
Pride events will be taking place on July 19th and 20th, and you can watch the speeches given by Whitburn and Faulconer AFTER THE JUMP…
