Irish Catholic Bishops Release Manifesto Opposing Same-Sex Marriage

In preparation for an expected referendum on same-sex marriage early next year, the Catholic Church in Ireland has issued a 16-page statement warning that gay marriage would be a “grave injustice,” reports The Journal.

“The Meaning of Marriage,” issued by the Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference, aims to inform Catholics “in preparation for the debate which will inevitably unfold during the coming referendum.”

The document argues that “marriage provides for the continuation of the human race and the development of human society” and to extend marriage rights to gay couples would “undermine it as the fundamental building block of our society.”

Safe_imageIgnoring single and LGBT parents, it states “children have a natural right to a mother and a father.”

At the launch of the document yesterday, unmarried celibate Bishop of Elphin Kevin Doran said:

“Marriage is, of its nature, a committed relationship between a man and woman which is open to the transmission of life.”

Speaking at a conference organized by anti-gay Catholic activist group the Iona Institute, Doran claimed that the church's opposition to gay marriage is “not about homosexuality or the gay lifestyle, it is about the meaning of marriage.” Bock the Robber provides an excellent investiagtion into the Iona institute here.

Earlier this week, Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Enda Kenny visited a gay bar in Dublin to support his party's LGBT group.
