Former Republican Congressman Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski took Mike Huckabee to task on Morning Joe Wednesday over his support of anti-gay Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis.
Both Scarborough and Brzezinski challenged Huckabee’s biblical and legal arguments opposing same-sex marriage and defending Kim Davis. Scarborough for his part challenged why Huckabee and many other right-wing evangelicals spend so much energy and time focusing on homosexuality when Jesus Christ never said on the subject.
“You and I both know, and I say this as a divorced man, that Jesus focused a lot more on lust, focused a lot more on the poor, focused a lot more on clothing the naked, visiting people in jail, taking care of the hopeless than he did on homosexuality. In fact, he never mentioned homosexuality.”
Scarborough went on to say that, “Jesus was far more explicit about divorce equaling adultery”, prompting Brzezinski to go on the offensive, asking, “Mike Huckabee, I asked you a question. Would you support a clerk who would not give Kim Davis a third or a fourth marriage license?”
Huckabee then played dumb, responding, “I’m not sure if I follow that question” before attempting to dismiss equivocating a clerk who has ‘sincerely held religious beliefs’ about adultery with one who has ‘sincerely held religious beliefs’ about same-sex marriage:
“What we’re talking about is whether we can redefine marriage,” Huckabee, wrongly, claims. “Not whether or not the law says a person can have more than one because the law clearly says what people can do. They can have a divorce.”
During his appearance Huckabee also made sure to call same-sex marriage a “a constitutional abomination”:
“[B]ecause of my faith I believe I have a responsibility to stand with those who are being persecuted not only for their faith, but for following the law, especially those who are being beaten up by the heavy hand of the judicial branch of government and put in jail.”
