  1. Let's get one thing straight: Johnny Weir outed Johnny Weir.

  2. That doesn't make Mark Lund any less of an asshole.

    Posted by: Trey | Jan 9, 2007 5:33:53 PM

  3. Could Mark Lund be any more nelly with those hand gestures and that voice of his. For him to say that Johnny Weir is too "out" is beyond funny. Good Lord!!!!!

  4. Mark Lund is not someone I want representing my community. Why doesn't the asshole out all the gay skaters.

    Posted by: kevin | Jan 9, 2007 5:41:56 PM

  5. Mark Lund's comments are made by someone who does not own a mirror. He's criticizing Johnny Weir for being too gay for people to relate to. To see an openly gay man so viciously go after this 22-year-old gay individualist for being too much of a ballerina and not conforming to gender roles is just gross. "I'm sorry, but..." "I'm sorry, but" Lund keeps sniping. No buts about it, Mark, you're just sorry.

  6. I feel embarassed for people like Mark Lund who have to play the role of "the good fag" desperately trying to be on the good side of the straights..As if that's going to make them like him more!! lol

And of course Johnny Weir is young, cute, talented and free-spirited, that has got to make him a little insecure as well.

  7. I'm not into figure skating, but I so hope Weir wins just so this Lund guy can explode. Jeesh. Can he be any more bitter?

  8. Evan Lysacek is much more adorable.

    Posted by: Jake | Jan 9, 2007 6:41:31 PM

  9. Weir winning would be the punch in the face Lund rightly deserves...

  10. In addition to the criticisms you guys brought up, Lund and Kerrigan are way, way, way, way off about the popularity and relatability of the flamboyant Johnny Weir vs. the straitlaced Evan Lysacek. At the recent Marshalls Figure Skating Challenge, where the rankings are determined by votes from fans, Weir came in second, while Lysacek never even made it out of the first round. Nothing against the very hardworking and tenuous Lysacek, but he utterly fails to capture the love and imagination of the public like Weir does. Weir is definitely not to everyone's tastes, but he has legions of devoted fans in the US and abroad. He is one of the most popular figure skaters from the US in quite a while, despite his relative lack of success internationally. I think Weir's style is working just fine for him.

  11. *Sigh* I would much rather we had Evan Lysacek playing for our team than Johnny Weir.

    Posted by: Aaron | Jan 9, 2007 6:56:40 PM

  12. "I'm sorry, but"... exactly WHO is Mark Lund?

    Posted by: MikeinSanJose | Jan 9, 2007 6:59:01 PM

  13. Oops, did I just call Evan Lysacek tenuous? I meant to type tenacious. Freudian slip? Really, though, I have a lot of respect for Evan. During the recent Winter Olympics, he skated a rousing and perfect long program despite being violently sick. A heroic effort. He has never been anything but gracious, and really does not deserve to be associated with an idiot like Mark Lund.

My hope for the upcoming US Figure Skating Championships is that both Evan and Johnny are healthy (Evan is quite injured right now) and skate the best they can, in which case Johnny will win. :)

  14. I am more worried about Nancy Pelosi, she isn't dealing with reality. Sweetie, this isn't San Francisco.

    Posted by: richard | Jan 9, 2007 10:28:35 PM

  15. Oh. My. Goodness. Miss Lund is displaying that annoying little tendency in this clip...whereby gays who fear admonishment from straights have to be careful not to turn their backs on their fellow homos lest they get RIPPED to shreds by one of their own, nevermind the heteros...ouch! And, while we are not monolithic, Mark is just dripping with such utter contempt for Weir, I thought his teeth would fall right out of his mouth on set...and Ms. Carrigan? What's her excuse? Oh, if I had a (Lilli)hammer...! I mean, Ms. Thing, err, Weir, is the reigning nationals champ, and it's sooo tacky to publicly disrepect his title, and forcast his defeat, just because personally you cannot stomach him and his flame of a persona, which melts the very ice he skates upon...go, Johnny, go...

  16. Johnny may not be to everyone's tastes, but he sure is to mine. I could eat him up. And if we're talking masculinity, Weir's courage and authenticity makes him ten times the man that that sniveling lace doily Lund is. What an ass.

    Posted by: Rascal | Jan 9, 2007 10:54:30 PM

  17. I thought I was alone. I couldn't believe this fucking Mark Lund trashing the very original Johnny Weir. Shame on you. Johnny has that Tollard Cranston artistic flair (ok, it is quite effeminate, but talented nonetheless). I don't know Evan, but all the best also. Go Johnny go! Courage, originality... that's what makes a man, flaming or not!!!

  18. Never been that attracted to Johnny Weir, but in that interview... wow, Weir = hotness. Oh, and Mark Lund can go fuck himself. Preferably with one of those fireplace pokers.

  19. Mark Lund is an embarrassment.

  20. I knew this would end up on this site. So here goes:

I am a big figure skating fan, and I post on a few fs sites. (Under a different name). I have always been a Johnny Weir fan, much more than a EL fan. But I do like them both.

I watched the show on Sunday, and believe me, after I posted Lund's comment on a certain fs site, boy, did I get responses. Most of which were a hate on for Lund. (who was fired from his editorial job at IFS, but that is another story)

Anyway, I like JW, but he does tend to shoot off at the mouth. He is better at that than his performances of late. And frankly, it bugs me. He is turning into an American version of Emanuel Sandhu. Boo.

Also, while Lund's comments bother you guys (as expected) like it or not, he has a point. While JW's style does not bother me (hell, I love it) the average American watching fs will prefer more "masculine" style skaters. That is just the way your society goes. North Americans are more hung up on what is "masculine" than Europeans seem to be. (Feel free to correct me on that assumption). And "masculine" skaters attracted fans more than "flamboyantly gay" ones. Sorry, but that is a fact. Elvis Stojko, Philippe Candeloro et al held the popularity for male skaters for awhile. But for the US, it is the female skater who will always be queen. Guys be damned.

Posted by: Lady Heather | Jan 10, 2007 4:56:19 AM

  21. Lady Heather...the nail in Mark Lund's coffin here is that he criticizes Weir for being more effeminate than other skaters all the while Lund himself can't even sit in a chair without breaking out some effeminate hand gestures of his own...Lund is the clutch purse accusing the pumps of being taupe...and no one likes a hypocrite.

    Posted by: peterparker | Jan 10, 2007 5:47:33 AM

  22. LOL, PeterParker... can I quote you on that fs website? I want you to say yes before I do.
"Lund is the clutch purse accusing the pumps of being taupe"

I love it. My fellow fs fans would too.

Posted by: Lady Heather | Jan 10, 2007 6:06:07 AM

  23. "Lund is the clutch purse accusing the pumps of being taupe" F**king hysterical, Peter!

I couldn't even watch the Johnny/Mark clip all the way through because I was so embarrassed by Mark's behavior. What a bitter queen. Go Johnny!!

  24. Let me clarify something I see happening in this debate. First, Lund is a pot calling a kettle black. I think we can all agree on that.

Second, however, Lund isn't criticizing Weir for being too gay for America. I think figure skating itself is pretty gay as-is and America likes it just fine. Lund and others are criticizing Weir for being erratic, attention-seeking and unfocussed in his approach to his art. The fact that he happens to be flamboyent while doing it just adds fuel to the fire. I come across many young gay men Weir's age who need to be the center of attention and make poor choices in doing so. If you are critical of that then suddenly you're just old and bitter.

I became a figure skating fan through my husband and I can tell you that most gay fans prefer the masculine skating of Lysacek, not because of any internalized homophobia, but because in any physical expression, whether it's gymnastics, or ballet, the male form looks best when performing masculine moves.

A male can look beautiful performing feminine moves yes. But there are plenty of females in the sport for that.

But that's a personal choice. There is no denying that Weir is talented and in the beginning I respected him for being so "out" and unapologetic about it. But at some point he has become a temperamental diva (as Lady Heather attests) and I don't care how brave or "fierce" someone comes across, if they haven't mastered maturity, then it begins to show.

oh and lastly concerning Europeans being more open to feminine skaters... Brian Joubert is about as European as you get and is one of the most masculine skaters around.

Wow. I'm sooooo using this quote!!!!! Thanks, Peter!!!!!!
