News: Gianfranco Ferre, Toronto, Alan Hays, Time Capsule

road.jpg Gay groups want Florida Rep. Alan Hays out of office. They claim he said that his cousin deserved to die after contracting HIV: "Minutes after the conference, Hays released a statement denying that he told two nurses and a regional manager for a nonprofit AIDS health-care program Wednesday that his cousin was 'queer as a three-dollar bill' and 'had that homosexual lifestyle and deserved what he got.'"

Belvedereroad.jpg Tulsa, Oklahoma time capsule built to withstand a nuclear bomb is destroyed by rust: "When civic leaders unveiled their freshly-unearthed 1957 Plymouth Belvedere last night in a gala ceremony involving plenty of colorful lights, draped curtains, and Enya-like music, they were no doubt horrified to discover that the car had been reduced to a giant, tailfinned paperweight." (videos)

road.jpg Rosie O'Donnell to meet with Price is Right producers about hosting gig. Meanwhile, she keeps on going about her time on The View: "I got to tell you, I've been hanging around with those heteros for a full year and it's not fun! Turn around one minute and they'll stab you in the back with a high heel. They will."

road.jpg Australian man sentenced to nearly five years in prison after lover dies in shoelace sex strangulation: "Late in the night they moved to the bedroom to have sex with Fraser reluctantly agreeing to tie a shoelace around Moore's neck and pull it tight. Justice Anderson said during this activity Moore suddenly collapsed. Fearing Moore was dead, Fraser covered his body with clothing and bedding and left the home. He was caught after the shoelace was found by police and revealed his DNA. Fraser pleaded not guilty to murder at the start of his trial but later accepted a prosecution offer to admit to the lesser offence of manslaughter. Justice Anderson said while he accepted Fraser did not intend to kill Moore, he described the man's conduct was grossly negligent or reckless."

road.jpg Investigation uncovers "extensive destruction" of RNC emails: "House investigators have learned that the Bush administration’s use of Republican National Committee email accounts is far greater than previously disclosed — 140,216 emails sent or received by Karl Rove alone — and that the RNC has overseen 'extensive destruction' of many of the emails, including all email records for 51 White House officials."

  1. In addition to Ellen's admirable shout out for Rosie at the daytime Emmy awards, I just read that the "ratings are up [post Rosie]" claim that Babwa WaWa made to Ryan MayHaveA Secret was based on contrasting this period last year to now. Fine—until she failed to mention [or realize] that this time last year Rosie hadn't yet joined the show.

In another example of selective perception [or willful distortion], Jasmyne Cuntnick is still putting the "bitch" in bitching and moaning under the house of race cards she's built over her friend Isaiah Washington's contract not being renewed. Which, yes, ladies and germs, is NOT necessarily the same as being "fired."

  3. Toronto As Gay As It Gets? As much as like Toronto I think Montreal beats Toronto in that contest.

  4. I tend to like Barbara, but her comment about Rosie vs. being about to talk about heterosexual sex was accidentally very revealing. Rosie's joke about high heels was obviously just that—a joke by a stand-up comedian. Right-wing sites are reporting it as Rosie whining or "attacking heterosexual women." Hm! And the ratings controversy is ridiculous. Anyone who believes THE VIEW's ratings are up post-Rosie is never going to learn to read between the lines. I think Barbara failed to mention that not because she's "almost 80," but because she knows how to play the game—say something, and a whole lot of people will believe it.

  5. I saw that story about the time capsule Plymouth and the first thought I had was "OMG THAT'S CHRISTINE!"

I know I'm sad and pathetic.

  6. Off topic, but I had to say I love the jewelry ad on this page with the misspelling that implores you to "FLAY NAKED WITH REICHEN".

I don't dislike him THAT much, but the directive made me consider it...

  7. Toronto Pride week is only fun because gays come from all over, rather than just the local Toronto gays who, for the most part, are stuckup and stand and pose types. Montreal gays don't bullshit around, if they want you they come right up and tell ya!

  8. Neal, that was funny, definitely not pathetic! Whodathunk she'd resurrect in a place Oklahoma!

Leo, tempted to agree with you, but it's a difficult comparison, like oranges and pommes. I live in Toronto and and still betwixed and betweened...

  9. the Toronto campaign might see better results if launched at least a month before Pride, rather than during Pride week... seems like wasted money, and effort.

  10. she's a comedians get a clue. What kind of gay-site is this where you bash your own. Very shameful and pathetic!

  11. "[The cousin of the Florida Representative] had that homosexual lifestyle and deserved what he got."

What is so wrong with this statement, other than the implication that unsafe sex necessarily characterizes the "homosexual lifestyle"?

If someone has unprotected anal sex with a variety of anonymous partners [and I don't know that that is the case here -- the linked article didn't have many details], in some sense they deserve what they have coming to them, no? Getting infected in that scenario is an expected outcome. Or should we instead blame the partner who infected him? Getting HIV in 2007 isn't something that happens to you, like being struck by a freak asteroid. It is something you do to yourself through negligence or lack of impulse control.

There is such a thing as bad luck -- condoms break, seemingly trustworthy people lie about their HIV status to partners -- but my hunch is that very few seroconversions in 2007 are attributable to such factors.

  12. Jason, the statement implied that by merely being gay he deserved to be infected, not that he lived on the edge. Regardless, if a person plays with poisonous snakes he has to live with the consequences statistically, but "deserving" getting bitten seems harsh, sort of making it on the same level as robbing a bank and deserving time in jail. I don't think so.

  13. Calm down Juile.

Rosie is just becoming annoying, plain and simple. It's her own fault for pretending that everything was ok when she was doing the show and defending Barbra non stop during the Trump fued. Oh but now that she's finally left, she wants to talk on and on about how badly she was treated....bitch please!

By the way. Rosie may call herself a comedian but i don't find her one bit funny

  14. "The statement implied that by merely being gay he deserved to be infected, not that he lived on the edge."

Maybe, as you suggest, the representative was referring to gays in general. Or maybe he had in mind those gay men who engage in reckless, unprotected sex. The phrase "homosexual lifestyle" works for both meanings. I don't know enough details about the case to say. But I do think it's a mistake for us gays to make enemies out of people before we know the facts.

"Regardless, if a person plays with poisonous snakes he has to live with the consequences statistically, but "deserving" getting bitten seems harsh, sort of making it on the same level as robbing a bank and deserving time in jail."

Agreed -- "deserving" is a strong word -- but it conveys the idea that we should not bail out people who dig their own graves.

  15. In regard to the Ian Huntley hunger-strike story - since when was Huntley gay? He's a notorious sexual predator with a well-documented history of preying upon girls and young women, but I've never heard any mention of him being a homo - is this some kind of ploy to ingratiate himself into the prison population (i.e. he'll be more accepted/less threatened if he's a poof rather than a kiddie-fiddler and -killer), some attempt to make himself seem more "human" and sympathetic (i.e. "he's in love so he can't be entirely irredeemable"), or just an example of freaks banding together for protection (gay sex optional)? This is a very peculiar story which needs to be followed up - I can't believe all is as it seems, remember this is the man who allowed himself to be interviewed by a news crew while the search was still on and who expressed disbelief and dismay at the girls' disappearance... I suppose that we should be grateful that nowadays homosexuals are considered less unpalatable than paedophilic murderers...

  16. Well secretagentman,

    A little bitter are we?
"if they want you they come right up and tell you"...
Sounds like you did'nt get asked...that's sad and sounding very bitter.

I was born, raised and came out in this city.
The gay community, and the city in general, has been open and excepting for a long time.
If you can't get laid in this city buddy...don't blame others.
"the fault lies in ourselves, not in our stars".
