Protestors Scold Gay NYC Council Speaker at LGBT Celebration

Quinnprotest

Protestors from the Radical Homosexual Agenda interrupted a celebration at New York's City Hall at a "Celebration of LGBT Pride" ceremony hosted by openly lesbian City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

Why? According to James Wagner, who reported on his blog:

"Because Quinn was the civilian agent for a secretly-negotiated agreement (there were no public hearings) with the NYPD which gives the police full authority to restrict public assembly and public speech (if more than 49 people get together anywhere, under any circumstances, they are all subject to arrest - unless they have applied to the police for a permit ahead of time and have received the department's approval). This policy was never submitted to the Council for consideration; no statute supports this agreement and practice; it is the creation of the Speaker herself."

According to Wagner, Quinn, who has thus far "made herself inaccessible to those who have sought to meet with her on this issue" said, after the protestors were removed, that "she was willing to meet with anyone who disagreed with her on the question of Police rules for assembly."

  2. Now that's the spirit. The more I hear about RHA the more I like 'em. It does my old activist heart good to see young queer folks in the streets, being loud and making a spectacle of themselves.

  4. New Yorkers,

Let Quinn know how you feel about her involvement in the passage of these clearly unconstitutional laws.

  5. I like the idea of this Radical Homosexual Agenda... it's so 12 Monkeys!

But couldn't they go after a bigger target?

  6. Chris B -- what target would you suggest when the 2nd most powerful politician in NYC is queer, and thinks it's fine for the NYPD to be the one to decide who gets to protest, who gets to have press passes to city hall, and for them to refuse permits for at least two (so far) queer events scheduled in June?

Evidently there is now a problem getting onto the NYC Council website. Hmmmmm....

  10. [shouting] "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!' I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell - 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Things have got to change. But first, you've gotta get mad!... You've got to say, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!'

  11. TYPICAL BACKSTABBING LESBIANS...

  12. If the ban effects everyone, why is it the gay groups who are going after Christine Quinn, an openly lesbian who has shown support for gay causes (like her boycott of Dublin, Ireland's St. Patrick's Day Parade because of their ban of gays and lesbians in their New York parade.)

And I have never heard of such a group called "Radical Homosexual Agenda"..it's certainly not a typical name gay people would use to fight for their causes.

Who are their leaders, and what's their "Radical Agenda"?

  13. ANON the other click on that nifty little thing called a link and go gayly (never straight)to their web site. Those darn internet tubes sure are hard to navigate hugh?

  14. "....typical backstabbing Lesbian..."

You're just joking, right? Y'all won't say stuff like that to their faces.

  15. "ANON the other click on that nifty little thing called a link and go gayly (never straight)to their web site. Those darn internet tubes sure are hard to navigate hugh?"

Ok, this definitively does not answer my question..as I think I know what a link is.

I've gone to that page, and all I've seen is a lot of numbly descriptions followed by paragraphs and paragraphs explaining why they're mad at Christine Quinn.

So why the secrecy? Like, we know Task Force is headed by Matt Foreman, or Larry Kramer led Act Up. So who are these folks, or their leaders?

I'd personally be weary of any gay group

    1) Which does not say when it was created.
    2) Which will not reveal who their leaders or founders are.
    3) Which does not list how many members it has, where or when meetings are held.
    4) Which has no address.
    5) Which singles out an out lesbian official out of thousands to focus their anger on.
    6) Which does not explain what their "Radical Agenda" is.
    7) Which does not list their accomplishments, nor their future goals/plans.
    8) Which presents figures that speaks nothing of the issues LGBT care about.
    9) Which uses rhetoric that is full of cliches and buzzwords that do not make a coherent whole.
    10) Which seems to use caricatures of itself and contradicts itself at every 2 lines as a way to justify its own legitimacy.

  16. Anon, if you think ACT UP had specific leaders or was "led" by Larry Kramer, you don't know your queer history very well. Most activist groups don't run they way you seem to expect them too. The ones that do run that way, such as the HRC, seem to be pretty incompetent, as they're playing by the rules an the USA is the most regressive rich country on the planet when it comes to queers.

  17. Barry, again that does nothing to answer my question. WHO are these people? who is at least [one] of their leaders or founders?

It should be a simple question to answer, I believe.

And since, you're diverting the subject towards Act Up to not answer even one of many inquiries : Larry Kramer was a co-founder of Act Up. He was a very public speaker for the group and laid out his AIDS fight agenda for everyone to hear. It's all right there at wikipedia, for your own history lesson. Larry spoke again at the 20th Anniversary of Act Up in March.

  18. Anon, ACT UP was "led" by a very de-centralized process of consensus, not by Larry Kramer. I'm not going to get into a debate with someone who is too chickenshit to use something other than "ANON" in the comments while complaining about activists who've been arrested not being forthcoming enough with their identities.
