Rare Northern White Rhino Death Leaves 13 Left in the World

Whiterhino

A rare northern white rhinocerous named "Nadi" who was living at the San Diego Zoo, has died, leaving the dwindling numbers of the species at 13 in the world. Only five are known to exist in the wild, at the Garamba National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Six are in captivity in the Czech Republic, and two others remain at the San Diego Zoo.

Nadi was thought to be over 40 years old, according to NBC San Diego: "Nadi was brought in from the wild in Africa in 1972 and was part of a group maintained in the Czech Republic. Nadi and another female rhino came to the Wild Animal Park in 1989 as part of a last-ditch effort to breed the critically endangered species. Although both females were of advanced years, zoo staff hoped that the presence of a new male rhino would inspire breeding. Reproductive efforts were undertaken throughout the early 1990s but no calves were produced."

  4. THIS IS A GOOD THING: the extinction of all species on earth other than mankind and domesticated animals that serve mankind is just Darwinism at its finest!!!

Besides, I never heard of this type of rhinoceros and 99.99% of humanity has never heard of it. It is kind of like a tree falling in the forest. If noone ever heard of this silly species it is like it never existed anyway!!!

  5. I agree with TonyTonyTony all the way!!! That nature preserve could be turned into farmland to grow crops to be sold abroad in exchange for american products. Everyone wins when another useless species goes extinct.

  6. Take it's cell and clone it? I mean, it's not like it's impossible. Then, try some artificial insemination? I mean, thing don't always need to go the natural way.

  7. The elegant rhino heads to extinction while coincidentally one of the week's top stories was about a 14 year old in Alabama killing a 1000 pound domestic hog, thought to be ferile, with a handgun. I guess that's called parenting in Alabama. So, we're an obese nation growing super-hogs, while the rhino dies off because Asian males crave the horn for fertility. Really bright thinking. Now that's evolution for you --- Darwin would be doing back-flips.

  8. Call me crazy, but I'd really prefer see stupid and ignorant human go extinct rather than this.
