Azis Billboard Too Hot for Bulgarian Authorities

Azis

A billboard featuring Bulgarian pop star Azis in a sexual embrace with his partner was ordered taken down in the town of Kustendil, Bulgaria's Sofia News Agency reports:

"The poster, which shows the new silicone breasts of the singer, advertises the fourth Bulgarian broadcast television channel TV2 to be launched on November 25. The producers have big hopes for the primetime show hosted by Azis will compete for TV ratings against the country's most popular late night show, hosted by Slavi Trifonov on bTV."

Azis made headlines in 2006 when he traveled to Germany to marry his partner, and again in August of this year when the couple had a baby daughter using a surrogate who was a friend of the sperm-providing singer.

  1. I wanted very much to like Aziz, but it looks like the Bulgarian circus has a new bearded lady in town. So how many years do we have to wait before he goes full-tilt Pete Burns? Attention whore.

  2. well, look at it this way... now he can be in 'a chorus line' and sing 'tits and ass.'

  3. yuck..yeah, exactly my thoughts,fizzie..Just more stereotyping material for all to see that gay men really wanna be women.Freak show indeed.

  4. oops...Azis.

  5. Oh, and Aziz's partner looks oh-so-in-love!!!! Looking bored up at the stars, detached.."where's my next trick? he thinks. Another open "gay" relationship.Hmmm, oh, they must need gay marriage..yeah, that oughtta iron out the problems gays face...tie the knot they're uncapable of keeeping tied. That looks like every gay couple I've seen. Utterly unconvincing.

  6. "ooops...Azis"

Yes, FIZZIEKRUNTNT, you turned him into an Arab with "Aziz", and everyone knows they're much prettier to look at...the Arabs, that is.

And I don't know any gay men who want to be women. I know a bunch of them who want to be men though. (I couldn't help it...queens are mean.)

  7. It always baffles me how many highly traditional and macho countries (Bulgaria, Pakistan, Mexico, Argentina, etc.) have pop stars like this or talk shows hosted by drag queens or TG/TV people.

Maybe they view them as a third sex or something, or just like to watch a freak show from the comfort of home. Though lots of those countries aren't too comfortable!

  8. Wow... what bitterness and nastiness today! Can't anyone be HAPPY for them? They are living in a very backwards country and to be so "out there" in the public eye is a very courageous thing. Asiz and Pete Burns may be embarrassing to the rest of you queens, but I admire them for their bravery and strength in keeping their own identity.

Is Azis my ideal for a gay man? No, and he probably wouldn't be my choice of a partner either. But I hope that the two of them are very happy and that their child will have a happy life with her two daddies.

And then Nikko says "Another open "gay" relationship.Hmmm, oh, they must need gay marriage..yeah, that oughtta iron out the problems gays face...tie the knot they're uncapable of keeeping tied. That looks like every gay couple I've seen."

I can only but assume that Nikko is a self-hating gay man (or a closeted right-winger) who believes the crap that comes from the anti-gay right. Nikko, I don't see any of the detachment or "bored" expression that you project on this photograph. And your generalized comments about gay marriage in general are despicable. Shame on you.

I guess you haven't "seen" the couples I have. One set is an older couple, my adopted uncles actually, who this December will celebrate 31 years together - and all that WITHOUT the benefit of marriage. Then there are my best friends who are soon to celebrate 15 years together, again without the benefit of marriage. I could go on and on with examples, but the world is much bigger than your own backyard, Nikko. Grow the fuck up.

  9. Wow -- amazing bitchiness and condescension to both the country and it's top pop star! He IS a pop star, for god's sake -- take a look at his videos on youtube. Amazingly talented, and that includes PR. So he fucks with gender, more power to him! So just chill and enjoy, but please spare us the internalized homophobia!

  10. PWAAAAH! Jonathon, I've been a great fan of Pete Burns for a long time and have NEVER found him embarrassing. I also have a biological uncle who's been with his partner for over 30 years and I absolutely adore them both. I only wish I'd gotten to spend my adolescent life with them to ease my own "coming out", but neither of them has ever sported a Van Dyke and Victoria's Secret at the same time while simultaneously rearing a child. That's gotta be a lot of work, sister. AND, she IS still her own circus. I didn't say anything that wasn't a fact.

  11. And Derrick!

    *SNAP!*

    Uh huhhh. LMAO!

    Posted by: FizziekruntNT | Nov 19, 2007 2:56:40 PM

  12. Azis who? Never heard of him! The fact of the matter is that he's publicly celebrating his relationship and that's more than we(the so-called civilized ones in the west) are allowed to do publicly (tv ads, posters, etc). More power 2 u, girl!

  13. "They are living in a very backwards country a..."

    Posted by: Jonathon | Nov 19, 2007 2:22:25 PM

Bulgaria is a member state of the European Union. It can't possibly be considered more backward than the average southern State where governors pray for rain, in public.

  14. Paul, I think you're right about these countries with seemingly opposing cultural phenomena. Mexico is a perfect example, where men are brought up to be macho and women to be subservient to men. However, you turn on the television, and there are these stereotypical gay characters (i.e. the flamboyant effeminate hairdresser and the prurient drag queen hostess)Yes, they are portrayed as funny, entertaining, and, simply, the life of the party... but it's only because the audience thinks they are freaks, clowns for comic relief. But God forbid there be an LGBT within their own family. Ultimately, in every day life, people remain as bigoted as always.

  15. In his part of the world, where I happen to be spending time recently, no one is asking "Azis who?" He's quite the phenomenon, videos on mainstream TV, a star. Sure there's the freak show component, one he seems smartly in control of, by the way, hence all the PR, but he's also talented. I can't say that I personally find him sexy, but I find the way he messes with gender ballsy and fascinating, in part because he's not a stereotypical drag queen. (Not that I don't love them, too.) This universe could use a few more superstar gender freaks.

  16. It takes way more guts to be a "freak" than it takes to be "normal".

P.S. I've loved Azis since the muscle bear video.

  17. Yep, Miguel. Similiarly, when I was in Turkey last summer there were tons of (gorgeous) boys obviously from well-off families, wearing shirts and suits their mothers had ironed for them before they went out to gay bars. I just wondered, where did the mothers think the boys were leaving for at midnight, and not returning from until 8 am?

Certainly few women are allowed that privilege, though Turkey is less restrictive on that than, say, India. I read some local papers talking about these gay boys I was meeting, and how they would never come out. They just wanted to get away with going to gay bars for as long as they could until their parents got too suspicious, and they were forced into marriage. Sad!

Wow, thank heavens no rich gay boys in the US are more worried about their inheritances than about living honestly. Oh wait, that's a total lie. I encountered far too many. Frankly I just can no longer accept or understand the death's emotional door that is the closet.

  18. i don't know who this person is. i have, however always said, it takes a lot stronger person than i to go out in public as a queen, drag queen. ts, tg, t what the hell ever and deal with people who are truly upset by you. go it for what's your name!
