A Gay Man for Secretary of the Navy?

The Washington Times reports that gay COO of the Intrepid Museum Foundation William White is being pushed by some for Secretary of the Navy:

"The secretary's job is a civilian position, so it would not run afoul of the ban on gays serving in the military, but it would renew focus on the "don't ask, don't tell" policy as President-elect Barack Obama prepares to take office. 'He would be phenomenal,' said retired Gen. Hugh Shelton, who was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1997 to 2001, pointing to Mr. White's extensive background as a fundraiser for veterans' and military causes. Retired members of the Joint Chiefs have contacted Mr. Obama's transition team to urge them to pick Mr. White, and members of Congress said he would be a good choice for a service secretary. 'He's very capable,' said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, New York Democrat, whose district includes the Intrepid Museum, a retired aircraft carrier berthed on the Hudson River in New York City."

  5. This is nothing but a distraction thrown out by Obama, Inc., to take the steam out of the totally justified RAGE over his treating Rick Warren like a respectable man who doesn't preach hatred ["gay marriage morally equals incest and pedophila"] but merely differs with the man who will give the benediction, the wonderful, pro gay Rev. Joseph Lowery, on unimportant "issues" like whether Jesus was left handed or right handed.

IT WILL NEVER FUCKING HAPPEN! He has totally backtracked even on repealing DADT! Putting out more and more bullshit about working with the Pentagon to get their buy in. Well, Bitch, you never said anything like that about their opposition to withdrawing from Iraq. You said, if necessary, you would remind the that YOU are the Commander-in-Chief.

But APPARENTLY only on things you actually get, actually care about...and that does NOT include gay equality.

  9. Wanna bet this appointment never happens? I'm becoming more and more convinced we'll get nothing from Obama. The best we can hope for is he won't be as bad as McCain/Palin probably would have been. Expect nothing from this administration and then you won't be disappointed.

  10. On rep Solis

We got screwed and the Unions got screwed

The hinted at appointment of lesbian Mary Beth Maxwell was much lauded by unions/ Labor.

Dean who fashioned the 50 state strategy and internet fund raising which enabled Obama to win the primaries and the general has also been tossed to the curb

    Oh well, screw us all

    a much disappointed Obama supporter

  11. JIMMY,

you are one of the few people who posts on this blog that I wish Obama could actually hear. I'm sorry you feel betrayed. I believe he will make up for it over the next four years.

  16. I'm disappointed there are no gay people in Obama's cabinet. Even worse, there are no gay people among the 22 Senior White House staffers. That means, day to day, Obama will not be interacting with ANY gay people.

That said, let's not smear Hilda Solis with lies about her record, please. She's an amazingly progressive choice for Labor. AND she gets a 100% rating from HRC and from NARAL.
