Obama Appoints Gay Man to High Post, Retains Another

Barack Obama has named a gay man his principal advisor in matters of personnel administration, and retained a Bush appointee as his AIDS ambassador.

Berry_dybulroad.jpg Clinton Assistant Interior Secretary John Berry is rumored to be Obama's Director of the Office of Personnel Management. Said The Victory Fund's Chuck Wolfe: "It says a lot about Barack Obama’s commitment to equality in the workplace that he has apparently chosen an openly gay person for this extremely important job. John has dedicated his career to public service, so it makes sense that he will be able help thousands of others who are willing to do the same."

road.jpg Bush appointee and gay physician Mark Dybul will keep his job as Global AIDS Coordinator as we head into an Obama administration: "A number of AIDS and reproductive rights groups have urged Obama to replace Dybul with someone the groups feel would be more likely to change the Bush administration’s insistence that at least some international AIDS relief funds be linked to abstinence-only programs. Among the groups calling on Obama to replace Dybul as AIDS coordinator are the International Women’s Health Coalition and the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States, which advocates, among other things, for gay-sensitive sex education programs."

But Richard Socarides, who helped coordinate AIDS policy during the Clinton administration, told Towleroad: "I think he (Dybul) gets universally high marks from both progressives and conservatives, gays and straights, for doing a terrific job with this, Bush's most important legacy program."

Below, you may remember Dybul's swearing-in, at which Condoleezza Rice referred to Dybul's partner Jason Claire's mother as Dybul's "mother-in-law," delivering the labels of marriage without the laws.

    - I think you mean, "at which Condoleezza Rice referred to Dybul's partner's mother as Dybul's "mother-in-law,"

  2. Good on Obama.

In the lower picture, the guy to Condi's right...it looks like he's trying to sneak a peek at Pickles' lazy eye.

  3. hi...
just a quick note... as it confused me at first...

at which Condoleezza Rice referred to Dybul's partner Jason Claire as Dybul's "mother-in-law,", delivering the labels of marriage without the laws.

is supposed to read "referred to |the mother of| Dybul's partner Jason..."

    thanks. have a good day.

  4. I thought maybe Condi had lost it again when I read that she called that hot gay man someone's "mother-in-law". After all, she once slipped at a cocktail party and referred to President George W. Bush as "my husb--.... the President..." (Condi has never married).

Alas, clicking on the link above reveals that "Rice referred to the mother of Mark Dybul's partner Jason Claire as Dybul's 'mother-in-law'." Much less fun!

Maybe after January 20, Condi can tell us why she bought a house in 1998 with a woman named Randy Bean. Does she have her own "mother-in-law", or does she just think Rice and Bean go well together?

  5. Unless it was changed in the language of the last funding renewal, it wasn't that just "some" go to "abstinence-only" training but no less than ONE THIRD. This has contributed to the continued spread of AIDS among perhaps hundreds of thousands of people.

"Abstinence" is a big enough joke/folly in teenage sex education, but the target audience in this case is primarily already sexually-active adults and such messaging is criminally negligent.

You'll recall that, when PEPFAR first started, Brazil turned down $40 MILLION rather than be forced to do a hypocrital about-face on their "use a condom" program which was greatly reducing the spread of new cases there.

I don't know the mechanism, if any, for changing the requirements of a program after it's been passed, a Congressional amendment one assumes, but that is a urgent need for the new Congress and Obama to work on.

  8. "Rice and Bean go well together?".
Gave me a chuckle over my first cup of joe.
    Thanks, Mike.
