Pussy Galore: Just Looking at This Makes Me Want to Sneeze
Craig Grant offers a home to more than 500 cats at his Caboodle Ranch near Tallahassee, Florida. Grant started it after suffering "empty nest syndrome" when his three kids moved out:
"What started as one cat quickly grew to 150. Grant would take in strays and pick up cats at construction sites. But, soon enough, five acres wasn't quite enough elbow room for all the residents, so in five-acre by five-acre patchwork plots, Grant expanded Caboodle Ranch into a 30-acre property. While some have called the ranch a dumping ground, according to Grant, he has taken keen attention to creating a home 'where cats aren't treated like animals.' Starting with $100,000 out of his own pocket, Grant has designed and built a showcase property that conjures notions of a gingerbread village. The feline city is complete with a city hall, police department, Caboodle chapel, an elementary school, and, of course, Walmart. To find respite from the hustle and bustle of downtown life, the kitties merely need to cross the river to the Cat Nap Inn, where they can relax in lake-front cabins."
Watch it, AFTER THE JUMP...

dogs are beautiful; pussies make me ill.

He and octopussy should get together.

I'm a total cat lover but this strikes me as a pathology creepily on par with Octomom. I hope, with all those romantic "lake-front cabins" he put some money aside for desexing his famously fecund feline friends. Pity the poor rodent, let alone native wildlife, that wanders unaware into those murderous acres...

Let's hope word of this place doesn't reach the bobcat or coyote population. Those cats might not be around for long. Granted, at $6K/month, they'll probably end up being put down when he realizes he can't afford to keep feeding them.

Looks like a great place for cats, rather than stray on the street. But how does he make sure they're ALL fed. Are they tagged? How do they ALL get their shots and visits with a vet. I really hope he has plans in place for when he passes, because there will be a lot of displaced felines. That said, I'm a little jealous.

Actually, DajNoquinOz, if you go to his site, you'll learn that he isn't just hoarding cats. All cats are spayed/neutered, keep up-to-date on their vaccinations, and receive medical attention. Special needs cats get 'round-the-clock care. It's now a non-profit organization, and he doesn't do 100% of the work by himself anymore. He does get help from volunteers. Arrangements have been made to continue his non-profit in case something happens to him. Sam, he's not putting any of them down. Go to his site, and you'll learn more about the organization. Caboodle Ranch is approved by and lauded by the Humane Society. This isn't just a crazy old man collecting cats in the woods. He's taking care of unwanted, abandoned, and stray cats that would otherwise be put down, starve to death, etc. AND, his cats aren't reproducing. It's both controlling the population of cats and respecting their sentience. It's a wonderful thing he's doing. Go to Caboodleranch.com to learn more about it, donate money, or see how you can volunteer if you're in the area.

ZooToo - Great video, but there's a few wrong facts in the story that should be addressed:
1. It was said Craig had 150 cats in his apartment before his landlord asked him to leave. He actually had 5.
2. Craig never had a $100,000 to start Caboodle Ranch. He bought land, shelter, and whatever else was needed as he could afford it.
3. 6,000 a month does not come out of Craig's own pocket. It comes from the donations of generous people who genuinely care for this shelter.
4. Craig did not build the little houses of Caboodle Ranch. These were built and donated to us by Pet Palaces.
Really a great cause and judging by the "catty comments" you should donate because you may end up here someday!

He must be a lesbian.

Good for him.
Both my cats are rescues and it's cause I support wholeheartedly. :)

If you like the pussies, you should check out how to properly care for them at this non-profit's site: www.research4cats.org.

That looks like my dream home. Seriously, ever since I was little I wanted to be the cat lady.
As long as he's getting them all fixed & makes sure they get fed, I say right on. Now I'm going to go to caboodleranch.com & make sure those things are happening & I might even donate.

I've always been fascinated by the vehemence people feel towards cats . . . and the subtle mysoginy (cat owners are lesbians?).
I love, love, love dogs. I became a cat owner because I wanted a pet and I cannot take care of a dog (I don't have the lifestyle that allows for running home after work to walk the dog), so cats were an option. Both my cats are incredibly playful and affectionate . . . especially my male cat who is very dog like--he plays fetch, sits near me all the time, etc.

It's a great thing he's doing. I love animals and can't bare to think of all the cats and dogs who are put to sleep because they don't have homes or in more recent news, whose owners can no longer "afford" to keep them (or so they claim).
At least these kitties have people who care for and care about them as well as each other and can live happy lives.

I never comment on this site, but I have to applaud that guy. I think what he's doing is neat, and if anyone actually spent time going to the website that details this cause instead of leaving retarded snarky comments, you'd see that he's not some crazy cat-person a la Octomommy. I'd volunteer there if I lived in that area. Good job handle-bar moustache guy!

Hey This Hot Mess - Thanks for the info, I did check out the site and now I feel really guilty for glibly suggesting he was Octomom-ish. My bad. This is a seriously great guy doing an amazing thing for a much-maligned species I actually love. Thanks again.

you rock I take care of fifty something at the moment, I work only part time for them because as you know they are a lot of work. I love each and every one and I mostly get the sick and unwanted ones as well. They are awsome and I wouldn't trade any of them or my life as well. Great job you are the perfect man!!!! Also I have a great husband who supports me mentally and financially as well. Keep up the great work you aren't the only one....
