Gay Couple Beaten Unconscious in Hate Crime on Oregon Beach

Samson Deal, 22, and Kevin Petterson, 22, two Seattle-area men who were taking a spring break weekend on the Oregon coast at Seaside, were beaten unconscious around 3 am early Sunday morning after leaving a beach campfire they were sharing with some other people and taking a walk together.

Firepit KOMO4 reports: "When Deal and Petterson finally came to, the two nursing students knew just how serious their injuries were. 'The whole event -- I really don't remember a lot, because I sustained a lot of head trauma,' said Deal. 'I've never had a face trauma like this or anything like that. It's pretty bad,' Petterson said.  Thinking back to the attack, the two men said they believe it was their sexual orientation that made them a target. 'All of the sudden, someone asked if were gay, called us 'fags,' then started punching us,' said Deal. The victims said three or four young men dressed in black attacked them, letting loose punch after punch. The attack left the two men severely injured and bruised. Petterson's right eye is so badly damaged he plans to see a plastic surgeon on Wednesday"

FOX12 reports: "Investigators said the beatings are hate crimes. The Seaside police chief said he has put two full-time detectives on the case and they are trying to find any witnesses who were on the beach Sunday morning and may have seen who was responsible for severely beating the two men. There were several people who were sitting next to the fire in front of the Best Western Hotel at the time of the attack and police would like to talk to them. Anyone with information in the case should contact Seaside police."

  1. Sadly, that part of the Oregon coast has some of the most backwards hillbillies that I have met. Not only are most of the men there unemployed, but are also addicted to CRANK. So it is no surprise to find out that there has been a brutal hate crime. Such a shame. That part of the coast is some of the most beautiful you will find.

  2. What is sad is so far there are no feelings for these two, only how ugly you think they are or that they are lesbians. These are two human beings that got beaten because they were gay. It shouldn't matter how they look. It is a sad state that you can't comment on the hate and pain that these two gentlemen endured, but you feel you have to make comments that you think they are ugly. I'll bet your all a prize. I have at least compassion and feel sorry for these men. This shouldn't happen to anyone.

  3. theyre both incredibly ugly

Then obviously this doesn't matter, clearly they deserve to die.

  4. Some of these comments are just sad and pathetic. Two guys get the crap beat out of them, but it's ok cause they aren't good looking to you? No wonder the gay community can't come together.

  5. Excuse me. Those two young gay men may very well visit this blog. In case they do: I've been through what y'all went through. I hope you recover quickly--physically & emotionally.

  6. What do their looks have to do with anything you morons? These people were gay bashed and could have been killed!! Are you really that shallow to miss the point completely? I hope they find who did this to these guys and prosecute them to the full extent of hate crimes law.

  7. ENDA needs to pass!

  8. Two bashing victims get bashed by their own people for their looks?

My, my, what a loving "community" gays have.

  9. Hey Meh, why don't you upload a picture of yourself, especially after you've had the shit beat out of you, and let's all evaluate YOUR looks.

  10. Yeah, I have to say, I thought they were lesbians too at first, but that doesn't matter at all. They weren't doing anything and got beaten because they are gay. This is horrible, and I feel so bad for them. At least they have each other to get through this together.

  11. Ugly's on the inside, Meh, and you have it in abundance.

  12. There are some really horrible comments on here. It's bad enough that heterosexuals are celebrating this. Anyway, I wish them well and justice is served.

  13. Meh and others knocking their looks, you losers are total assholes.

You pathetic individuals are the ones deserving the beat down these poor guys received.

Let's hope someday you get it.

  14. It takes a special kind of person to find fault with the crime victims looks as opposed to, or even in addition to, the crime.

In the likely event that the these two kids stumble upon this site I would like to apologize for the stupidity of our brethren (the world is full of assholes - gay , straight or indifferent). I wish you a speedy recovery and hope they catch the cowards that did this to you soon. If you are the kind of people that believe everything happens for a reason then perhaps this horrible experience will make the two of you even better nurses than you would have been before. Godspeed.

  15. For those who read these kinds of stories essentially every day on sites like this and still aren't ready to get concealed-carry permits, there's now a Taser (the C2) for personal use.

Our lives and safety are worth protecting.

  16. It's sad that so many commenters are more concerned with how hot the victims are rather than what happened to them. This post, combined with the thread about that Republican congressman, proves that for a large number of gay men, good looks are the only thing that matter.

For anyone surprised by this attack, keep in mind there was a lengthy article last week that recapped a bunch of gay bashings around the world. This is a rather common thing, despite what some people would have you believe.

  17. Wow...I am shocked at the comments here. How very sad!

  18. Wow! Commenting on the looks of two guys who get bashed unconscious - super classy. I'm going to have to lay off reading Towleroad for a while as the comments have lately bothered me more than some of the stories.

  19. It takes a special kind of person to find fault with the crime victims looks as opposed to, or even in addition to, the crime.

And to rush to show off their cruelty and indifference with a blog comment--as if they are trying to impress us all with their toughness.

It's one of the most primal defense mechanisms of childhood, isn't it? When you see the bully smear the victim, you desperately try to distance yourself from the victim in any way possible.

Posted by: Sportin' Life | Mar 24, 2009 1:07:41 PM

  20. You *fuck-tards* that have posted comments about these victim's appearance are as disgusting as the bashers themselves!

Grow the fuck up you self absorbed preening pricks. Honestly you give us all a bad name.

  21. That's useful information, mad john, but generally gays unwilling to protect themselves in any way, and depend upon law enforcement and everyone but themselves in this area aren't gonna get a taser, either. It's very difficult to feel bad for them when they know the stakes.

This is terrible. I hope the perps are brought to justice. They probably won't be, though, even if they're caught (which, too, is unlikely).

  22. I am wondering how many LGBT centers or organizations offer self defense classes?

    I don't think I've ever seen such a thing.

Is that even something people would be interested in?

Posted by: Anthony in Nashville | Mar 24, 2009 1:40:29 PM

  23. Wow, now Tank's doing it too.

Victims of bashing are simply "unwilling to protect themselves". That's why they get bashed, you see. But Tank is "willing", so something like this could never happen to him. Or so he likes to tell himself.

None of which is intended to dispute his main point--that our situation as gay men would improve greatly with one or two well-publicized incidents of would-be thugs getting shot in the face at point blank range.

  24. Clearly, some of the posters here don't belong on Towleroad. You may want to Google "uneducated" for other websites that should make you feel more at home.
