On a gay adoption: "We are often asked what Scott calls his two fathers. Before the adoption, we asked ourselves the same question. Some gay couples we know who had adopted let their child use their first names, but that seemed to deny Scott the chance to use a word used by most of his friends. Others, where one partner is from a different country, used something like 'Daddy' and 'Papa' to differentiate. In the end, we settled on 'Daddy' (for Michael) and 'Dad' (me), uncertain whether Scott would be able to make sense of the distinction. We needn’t have worried. He gets it right all the time."

  5. I've read various accounts of the SF kissing incident, and it is extremely difficult to know who is telling the truth. The two guys were on their way to a movie screening where half the audience is wasted, so I wouldn't necessarily take their account as fact. (I'm not saying they're lying, either; it just sounds like exaggeration on both sides.)

  6. Re: Reversing MS: what amazing, and promising, news! I hope this turns into something clinical for humans. And to think, it came from a country with nationalized health care!

    Re: Two Dads:
We started telling our son that we were "Daddy" and "Papa" as soon as he was placed with us (as 13 mo. old foster child). About a year later I decided to start calling his "Momma" his "Birthmother" and he suddenly switched to calling us by our first names. I gave up on the birthmother thing since there was no confusion about any other mother, but our son continued with our first names. We let this go for a month or so, then told him he needed to use our parent names because we are his parents.

Now he's discovered the efficiency of "Dads" when we're both around and he doesn't care which of us answers and "Dad" when he can't be bothered to remember which name to use. Sometimes I correct him, mostly not though. (As another options, we have friends who use Daddy T and Daddy J.)

The funniest thing is that straight people get so worked up about it.

  7. Re: Boulder story...our local paper (The Daily Camera) reported that the wife (Traci Housman) "explained to detectives that her husband had told her years ago he was bisexual, and she had no problem with that. But, she said, she told him that night 'that it was disrespectful for him to announce this to everyone since they were married...'" More at http://tinyurl.com/qcwvcz.

So it seems that she didn't stab him because of his sexuality, but rather that she was angry with him for disrespecting their marriage (after lots of drinking, apparently).

  8. I have yet to see a killer of a gay man get charged with first degree murder. The prosecutors always use lesser charges for these killers.

  9. Rhode Island protest - i am so pissed. I will be in that state next weekend not this weekend...if someone wants to take a picture while holding up a sign that reads "Maggie Gallagher - Gluttony is a deadly sin; Repent now you hypocritical pig" I would probably wet myself with glee. Is that completely wrong and morally offensive? I'm pretty sure pleasures of the flesh include overeating - now if you'll excuse me, there is some chocolate in the cabinet and red wine on the counter calling my name.
