What Does Gerard Butler Know About a Gay Guy and a Cucumber?
Via Back2Stonewall comes this clip of Gerard Butler telling news media at the premiere of his new movie The Ugly Truth that filmmaker Robert Luketic hired him because of a joke he told about a gay guy and a cucumber.
Says Butler: "A gay guy walks into a greengrocer and he says 'Can I have a cucumber please?' And the greengrocer says, 'Eh would you like that sliced?' Ha ha. 'What do you think I am, a slot machine?' It's not very funny. It's just that the way I said it."
If only Butler would demonstrate. An interesting interview recently resurfaced from a 2004 interview in Movieline, in which Butler discusses his bisexuality:
"One aspect of himself that he is not yet fully able comprehend is his sexuality. 'I talk about my sexuality,' he says, 'But it’s always glossed over. People seem to shy away from the issue. Whenever it is discussed, its distended and exaggerated. Gerard Butler is gay. No I’m not. I don’t know myself what I am so it can be bewildering to see that being plugged. I have been in relationships with women. And men. That doesn’t make me gay. That doesn’t make me straight. Its hard enough to go through these things in my mind without being scrutinised about it so there are times when you want to close the door and say my sexuality is my own personal business.'"
Butler was last seen running from New York Housewife Kelly Bensimon.

That interview actually sounds quite genuine to me.... but if you click on the links you mention, Andy, you'll notice that a couple of posters say it's a proven fake, that it only appears on messageboards and there's no original source for it.
Weren't there people claiming for ages that Channing Tatum was openly bi, but I could never find any actual source for that?

Ew. The straights can have him.

this made me a little wet...

Back when the movie of "Phantom of the Opera" was released, director Joel Schumacher gave an interview in which he mentioned Butler's homosexual side. Butler evidently was pissed off about this being brought up, but I never saw anything more about it. Wish I could remember where the interview was published...

He seems like an "any port in a storm" kind of guy...and he's not all that hot
Posted by: RONTEX | Aug 5, 2009 11:25:55 AM
I don't get where people feel a need to comment on someone's looks in an article about his (alleged) bi-sexuality.
Maybe he's not your cup of tea, but what are you looking for? Validation that your opinion counts for something?
Seriously, Roscoe and Rontex, WTF.

I ran into Gerard Butler on the street here in NYC this winter. He was wearing a gray peacoat and jeans and through all of that I could see that he is a delicious hunk of man. He is absolutely more gorgeous in person than you think. And he's bi? Swoon.

@ frozen north, it's just an opinion, everybody has one
Posted by: RONTEX | Aug 5, 2009 11:56:40 AM
Frozen, I never made any comments about Butler's looks. Butler's looks aren't the problem. My disgust with Butler comes from his utter lack of acting ability, and his starring role in the foulest film of the decade, the unspeakable war-mongering shitfest known as 300.

I'm glad you guys don't want him. I'd much on his ass for hours... even if he had fajitas for lunch.

HUH? What drugs is he on?

Gerard Butler is an enigma. As an actor he knows the depth and width of his capacities to be anything his range allows him. If he indeed says he's bi-sexual he is at least telling a half truth.
What we should be discussing is why FUNNY PEOPLE has a zillion jokes about cocks and dicks and penises. If I am close to the neighborhood of the truth, male Hollywood is latent about where their sexuality takes them. And the public plays the game by trying to label Tom Cruise, Will Smith and now Gerard Butler. Let it rest. We all make a choice about what chemistry dictates.

Now would be a good time for someone to check with Movieline and see if this interview is genuine. I've seen it online before also, and it has always just been this same snippet, and never on a reputable site, so it was suspect. If it is fake, that would explain why it's never gotten more coverage in 5 years.

I've always thought he was hot, but my impression of him is that he would fuck a skunk and love the stink. I guess that could be taken as bisexuality. I'm glad he drew the line at Kelly Bensimon, though.
And has Joel Schumacher ever cast anyone that he hasn't wanted (or had) personally?

While in some ways it would be lovely to live in a world where everyone was happily bisexual, my (far too) many experiences with people who use the label have been unpleasant. Hardly anyone still calls themselves bi at age, say, 40, and by then are gay or straight. In the meantime, they've screwed with a lot of people's emotions because they've switched teams repeatedly.
A broad generalization, but entirely true in my extensive experience. I seem to attract "bisexual" men like ants to honey, and I really wish it weren't the case.

Butler is a spectacular actor if you watch his earlier British work. Have you seen "Dear Franky"? Though I have to admit I am very disappointed that he has fallen into the romantic comedy genre once he went Hollywood. Most of those movies are crap, but I guess one has to make a living however they can. I think he would be better off artistically if he did smaller independent films...or moved back to Britain.

"he would fuck a skunk and love the stink."
That actually sounds like my kind of guy...here piggy piggy =]

Shame on you for not taking the 2 seconds to head over to Movieline and confirm whether this interview was real or not. If you had, you'd have seen this on the front page:

Sorry folks, the interview was fake. :(

Do we really want a guy on our team that would be so crass as to tell a cucumber up the ass 'joke' on the red carpet and national television.
I say absolutely NO.
What an OBVIOUSLY gross and typical Heterosexual.

One morning we're going to wake up to our morning coffee, and the news will be reporting the terrible tragedy of a deranged gunman who walked into a midwest Wal-Mart and opened fire, randomly killing heterosexuals before turning the gun on himself.
And we'll never hear from commenter Bill again.

Okay, I'm glad to hear that this interview may be fake. The first question anyone who hears this type of "joke" should be asking is "why does the character in the joke need to be 'a gay guy?'" It would work as well with a woman or a straight or bi guy (but still wouldn't be funny).
If he really is confused about his sexual orientation, I don't know why he would be. If he finds he's strongly attracted to men as well as women, then "bisexual" is the easy word to describe that.

LOL @ Crispy on Bill
honey, you always make my day!
Posted by: Kevinvt | Aug 5, 2009 5:28:52 PM
Well I was extremely excited and now rather disapointed by this whole thing. Of course he's not bisexual. I wish though....
