Watch: Lieberman on Chances for Senate Vote on 'DADT' Repeal

Lieberman

Senator Joe Lieberman says he's made no progress with his friend John McShame in convincing him on DADT but believes that there are 60 votes for cloture on the NDAA, which contains the repeal amendment.

"I believe we have more than 60 Senators, including a good solid handful of Republicans, who are prepared to vote to take up the Armed Services bill, which already has within it the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. And the real challenge here is the clock. Will we take the time to have the debate, not just on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell but on the underlining Defense Authorization bill. And I can tell you that some of the Republicans who want to be for this, also want to make sure that Senator Reid offers them a fair amendment process.

The Wonk Room suggests that some GOP leaders are "hinting that they will try to run-out the clock or pressure Democrats to drop the measure in return for Republican cooperation on the New START treaty."

Nice. So much for "...government for the people"

  2. I wonder how any of this is going to happen given the letter that all 42 Repugnants have now signed stating they won't allow anything to transpire until the tax issue is resolved.. why no mention of the letter?

  3. I have a great idea. Congress can make up a bill repealing DADT and tie it in with a pay raise for themselves. It would pass unanimously.

  4. Well, evidently they can't multitask.. I'd hate to see them drive and talk at the same time.

  5. Maybe we should hope that the Dems would place an amendment repealing DADT to the tax bill that the Republicans want so bad. Bet the Dems won't even consider this because it would most likely work and the real issue is the Dems don't give a shit about us or our rights.

How sincerely the Democrats care about us is certainly open to debate (a number of Dem's have been continually outspoken in favor of DADT repeal--there's no reason to believe they've been disingenuous), but at this point repealing DADT would be a definite political boost for them, and not passing it would be politically disastrous. On politics alone it's in their--and Obama's--best interest to get this done and done quickly.

  7. Lieberman should be ashamed of himself.

The "fair amendment process" will include all sorts of awful things, most of them designed to scuttle DADT and to push other conservative issues like a ban on abortion in the military.
