Wingnuts Play Victim Card at DOMA Hearing; Sen. Grassley Portrays Equality Seekers as Violent Mob: VIDEO

Grassley

At the beginning of today's hearing on DOMA repeal, Senator Chuck Grassley suggested that the GOP had wanted to call a female witness (Maggie Gallager, perhaps?) but that she was too frightened to testify, Think Progress reports:

GRASSLEY: The minority very much hoped to call a witness today at this hearing to testify in support of DOMA, I’m sure she would have done an excellent job.She declined, however, citing one reason the threats and intimidation that have been leveled not only her but her friends and family as a result of her support of DOMA. She will continue to write on the issue but will no longer speak publicly.

  3. "She will continue to write on the issue but will no longer speak publicly."

It couldn't possibly have anything to do with her not wanting to lie to Congress or having her "argument" and "facts" easily disproved, could it?

Of course she's not testifying. Why would a member of the Anti-Gay Industry want to hurt their own business by being exposed as a liar?

  4. Was Senator Grassly under oath when he made the statement? I don't think there was a real person scheduled to testify but he used "her" to make an accusation against opponents of DOMA.

  5. I wonder if Gandhi or Rosa Parks ever backed down like this? What a courageous crusader for truth.

  6. Afraid to testify because of threats, huh? That's still better than being afraid of getting beat up while walking down the street minding your own business just because someone doesn't consider you "normal". But yeah, Maggie, you're the victim.

  7. The life of a bigot is so hard!
Isn't the more likely explanation: she didn't want her testimony to be filmed and thus preserved for eternity.
Or, perhaps the pink sweater set was at the cleaners.

  8. Oh please. We should be so lucky if Gallagher never spoke publicly again.

  9. Show us the DOMA supporters and other right wing bigots who have been beaten, permanently disfigured, murdered, and driven to suicide by the "vicious equal rights supporters"..... I'm waiting.
    On the other hand......

  10. Mags has no problem peddling her lies and appealing to people's fears and prejudices where she is not under oath and can't be cross examined. She won't appear because her biased claims and indefensible views cannot withstand any real public examination of the facts. You will never see any of these cowardly DOMA supporters put themselves in the true light of day to have their bigotry examined. This the same pathetic argument they made during the Prop. 8 trial to keep the testimonial evidence from public view.

  11. Since it was read by a Republican Senator for Ms. G:

"Not intended to be a truthful statement."

  13. PROOF...I would like to see proof to substantiate these "threats" to her safety and the safety of anyone she knows. I suspect like most anything that falls from her mouth or that she writes...it's all a pack of lies.

  14. I donno. Usually, Maggie is not worried about making a fool of herself. However, maybe she was afraid of being cross-examined. She is not afraid for her safety.

  15. @justme: That's exactly why she declined to appear. She's smart enough to avoid lying under oath, and all witnesses at today's hearing were sworn in.

She'd have been happy to appear if she could have done so without taking an oath to tell the truth.

  17. I'll be the British said similar things about Americans in the 18th century. Any group that's vociferously demanding their equal treatment under the civil law and ridiculing their oppressors look like a mob to those who would deny their equal humanity. To those who believe in equality, that mob looks more like a majority of the American people.

  18. I'm guessing it's not maggie. She's never had a problem promoting her bigotry. She would be happy to be the grand marshal of a bigot pride parade.

  20. I think the proof has to come from the pro-DOMA side because there is no real justification for the law. The only benefit it provided at the time was to stop Newt Gingrich from introducing the FMA, which might have passed.

  21. The GOP and professional bigots like Maggie might want to rethink the strategy of pretending to be shivering and quaking in fear at the thought of getting beaten up by gays. Somehow I don't think that's gonna play well out there in America, even with the homophobes.

  22. "She will continue to write (publicly) on the issue but will no longer speak publicly."

...That way she does not have to logically argue her reasoning with people who do not think and act as she does.

So difficult being the martyr these days.

  23. "she will no longer speak publicly"--well that obviously rules out Maggie the Mouth. Who can it BE?
