Priests Do Battle At Site Of Jesus's Birth

450px-Grotto_of_the_Nativity_Orthodox_AltarThe Christmas spirit was nowhere in evidence last weekend at Bethlehem's Church of The Nativity, where clerics of the Greek Orthodox and Armenian churches came to blows on Christmas Eve while cleaning the building in preparation for holiday services. According to Reuters, about 100 "holy men" duked it out with brooms and fists, fighting over territory in the 1,500-year-old building.

According to tradition, a silver star in a cave beneath the church's "Basilica of The Nativity" marks the place where Jesus was born.

Watch the clerics go at it AFTER THE JUMP ...

  5. Greeks and Armenians getting in a fight? No way...we're lucky the Russians weren't there or hell, the melee probably would have brought down the old church.

  6. I have no respect for religion. I just feel sorry for people who waste their lives blathering on about make believe.

  8. well historically it was once a shrine to Adonis-Tammuz but the early church bishops instead of using their brains decided the Adonis-Tammuz worshipers took over the Jesus shrine

    Chicken before the egg

    as vs reality

was a shrine to Adonis- Tammuz and xtians took it over and slapped a Jewish face on the savior gawd

    egg before the chicken

  9. This is nothing new at all. In fact, it was a fight much like this that led the runup to the Crimean War in the 1850's. Read THE CRIMEAN WAR: A HISTORY, by Orlando Figes. From a fight among "Christians" over which church got possession of a key to some of Jerusalem's holy sites to the horrible botches and blunders and privations of 3 years of murderous fighting, this grand book reveals a fascinating tale. And, as the news item shows, some things never change.

  10. I've got it. This is the precursor to a new reality TV show, possibly on, say, the Catholic Channel or Trinity Broadcasting Network: "Christian Pugilists' Smackdown". I can see it now, brothers and sisters, nuns v. nuns, ministers v. ministers, monks v. monks, and, let's not forget, priests v. (you fill in the blank). Could be a real ratings winner.

  18. Religion is the WORST evil that has ever been created...and anyone who adopts it's looney messages deserves to live the life of opression it offers. Congrats. Enjoy it.

  19. Do we really expect anything more from people who believe a man made book that was meant to be a fairy tale, but turned into something serious because some people REALLY wanna believe they'll go somewhere pretty, and fluffy with clouds when they die? Religion breeds crazy. Spread the good word.

How bad is it when the Palestinian Authority has to "restore order" in your church?

  22. @SHANNON Shocked anyone here might know that! So much of Yeshua has been corrupted by the orthodoxy of the Jesus myth. A fascinating history that maybe 1% actually know. Fantastic!

  24. This has nothing to do with religion, but rather another venue to work out old prejudices, grudges and hatreds. Greeks vs. Armenians, case closed. That's it. And no, these aren't Catholics, they're Orthodox and Non-Chalcedonians. People want to so bad to trash talk religion that they fail to see what's really going on. Religion simply isn't as important as y'all think it is.

  25. Over 100 Priests fighting with each other, in the most holy of churches, The Bethlehem Church Of The Nativity!?! ... Did someone throw a naked alter-boy in the middle of them?
