The Journey to 'Testimony': VIDEO

Last month, we posted "Testimony", the Stephen Schwartz collaboration with the SF Gay Men's Chorus which turned portions of Dan Savage's "It Gets Better" project into a choral anthem about coming out and living powerfully.

Videographer Sean Chapin produced a mini-doc about the making of the video. He writes:

The video, which is essentially an It Gets Better video, covers the journey that chorus members experienced in singing "Testimony" during Spring 2012, as 44 chorus members talk about how hard life was when they were growing up to the point of some trying to take their life, then talk about how much better life got for them as adults, experiencing exciting adventures and being able to sing with each other - all within the context of this song.  Also shown in the video is footage of us singing the song in various settings (first run-through, rehearsal, retreat, director's prelude), leading up to the Skywalker Sound recording.

  1. Clean up on aisle three. Someone to aisle three with a mop for a clean up!

  2. I was lucky, I was never teased or bullied. After watching this video and the performance video, I almost feel guilty about that. It was worth watching.

I know a lot of people dislike Dan Savage, but the "It Gets Better" idea was genius.

  3. Will there be a hard copy or download of the performance and/or the "making of" documentary ever be available?

  4. Hi Tessie Tura,

You can purchase the Testimony DVD, which has both videos (the music video and the "making of" documentary), at the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus website here:

A portion of proceeds will be donated to the It Gets Better Project.

  6. In many ways, this video is more poignant and beautiful than the actual music video that was released last month, because it tells the personal stories of the amazing and astounding men who sang this song, as well as the stories of those people we hope will hear this song...because they need to. Please take a few moments to experience this journey and share it with someone. You never know who might be listening.

...and yes, the Testimony DVD with "making of" video is available for sale at as is the downloadable version of the song itself.
