Hugh Hefner: 'The Fight for Gay Marriage is a Fight for All Our Rights'

Hugh Hefner speaks out about the importance of defeating the conservative battle to deny gay people civil rights, in the new issue of Playboy, Politico reports.

HefnerSays Hefner in the issue:

“The fight for gay marriage is, in reality, a fight for all of our rights. Without it, we will turn back the sexual revolution and return to an earlier, puritanical time. Today, in every instance of sexual rights falling under attack, you’ll find legislation forced into place by people who practice discrimination disguised as religious freedom. Their goal is to dehumanize everyone’s sexuality and reduce us to using sex for the sole purpose of perpetuating our species. To that end, they will criminalize your entire sex life...This is a religious nation, but it is also a secular one. … No one should have to subjugate their religious freedom, and no one should have their personal freedoms infringed. This is America and we must protect the rights of all Americans.”

  3. Back in the 80's I was honored to visit the beautiful Playboy Mansion in L.A. as I had friends working there with Mr. Hefner's collection of soft-billed birds. Word from the inside was that he only hires(ed) gay male staff so as not to create any concern that the help would mingle too closely with the playmates. So Mr. Hefner has been gay friendly ever since then. So Bravo once again Mr. Hefner for your intelligent stance and support. He gets us.

  4. Bravo Mr. Hefner. I don't drink your particular brand of lemonade, but you've really hit the nail on the head here. My hope is that this messages gets across to some who would not normally hear it.

  5. "People who practice discrimination disguised as religous freedom"-Very well spoken Mr. Hefner. Hef has even gone on record as having had sex with men-YES! The epitome of a "Man's Man" as Jason would refer to him has enjoyed the pleasure of other men.
Thanks for the support Hef-your an amazing man! Bravo.

  8. I worked in Mr. Hefner's office at the Mansion in the 1990s and can confirm that the oft-repeated rumor that only gay men are hired to work there is an urban myth. The Mansion is a corporate facility and has a very large staff, but when I worked there I didn't know of anyone else who was gay.

Mr. Hefner is a longtime supporter of gay rights -- he was the subject of a cover story in The Advocate when I worked there. He has also been quite open about his own same-sex experiences, most of which occurred during group sex.

  9. drip... drip... drip...

That dam of religious intolerance is showing cracks... big-time.

    Thanks, Hef.

  10. love it and the fact that he appears sometimes in his pjs just makes this great! A friend always says that if a politico gets the answers right on supporting gay and lesbian rights -- they almost always line-up on the right side of most other issues of concern to the left.

  11. Hugh Hefner spoke out for gay rights as early as 1955 in his two-year-old magazine, Playboy, writing back then, "If it was wrong to persecute heterosexuals in a homosexual society, then the reverse was wrong, too." He continues that line in the new issue.

  15. Hugh Hefner is a creep. He and his Playboy empire contributed to the bisexual double standard. It's a homophobic double standard which promotes female bisexuality but pretends male bisexuality doesn't exist. He's a creep of the first order.

  16. I love Hugh... He is a man who has lived by his own rules ... If I ever saw him I would shake his hand and thank him profusely for his decades-long support..

  18. "Word from the inside was that he only hires(ed) gay male staff..."

Porn star Al Parker was hired for that very reason. Unfortunately, he was fired quickly because of incompetence (in spite of his 9"). If I remember correctly, he spilled a drink on Bill Cosby.

  21. "We don't need this amoral man in our corner."

Andrew and I agree here. Yes, I know a movement will want help from wherever it can get help, but Hefner is associated with decadence and the gay rights cause doesn't need more of this image. A pro-family image will make it easier to change public opinion in favor of gay equality. Gay men are no threat to Hefner. That just means less competition for straight men who live for casual (straight) sex. And then, the logic of the sexual revolution gives Hefner and those like him no real reason for opposing gay rights. So his support doesn't involve him struggling very much.

Sorry, Andrew. I know you love to hate me, but were on the same page with this one!

  22. Maybe his next move is to come out of the closet. Hefner makes Liberace seem tame.

  24. @Andrew- This "amoral" man? Please, like you've never watched porn. Well said Hefner!
