Watch Clint Eastwood Talk To An Empty Chair At RNC: VIDEO

Yep, you read that headline right: actor Clint Eastwood, the "secret speaker" for the RNC's climax tonight, spent part of what is being kindly described as a "rambling" speech having a one-sided conversation with an imaginary President Obama.

He also said there are a lot of conservatives in Hollywood, they just don't go "hot-dogging it" and was goaded into doing "Go ahead, make my day," which he then turned into a call and response.

Benjy Sarlin from Talking Points Memo said the audience "seemed alternately confused and rapturously excited by the display".

Get confused yourself AFTER THE JUMP.

  2. wow.........sadly came off as a senile old man

shame on romney and his campaign taking advantage of a senile old man

a whole heap of romney staffers need to be fired for thinking that was going to be a good idea

  6. Wow why did they embarrass Clint Eastwood like that? I prefer to remember him as that sexy "Blondie" not this. I feel pity and that's not good.

  7. Very apt to speak to an invisible Obama. They've been running against an imaginary socialist jihadist tax-raising Obama for four years.

  8. The party of Christian family values must have missed the fact that Clint divorced his first wife with whom he had a bunch of kids ( seven, I think) and married a pretty young thing 35 years younger than himself. And I guess that he never read what Jesus said about that. I'll refresh:" A man who divorces his wife and marries another is an adulterer". So much for family values. They are all frauds.

  9. I enjoyed Romney's "Obama promised to heal the earth and lower the oceans. I promise to help your families and create jobs."

    Bye-bye, Goofy O.

  10. "Americans need to practice saying "President Romney".

    -Michael Moore

  11. Tom Brokaw tweet

Brokaw tweeted that Eastwood became famous as being a man of few words. "As a surprise guest on the Tampa stage he had too many words (I say as a friend)," Brokaw wrote.

wow, just wow....and that will probably be the nicest way to put it but this weekend will most likely see little about romneys speech and be mostly about the train wreck they had with clint

  12. "Obama promised to heal the earth and lower the oceans. I promise to help your families and create jobs."

What a dumb-ass line. As if families aren't affected by climate change.

  13. This just makes me sad. In the past, Clint has turned in some truly amazing work as both an actor and a director.

  14. "Go ahead... change my diaper"

  15. What a lame convention. When Marco Rubio spoke Spanish about six people in that arena could understand him. And six is about the number of well placed African Americans the cameras could find. Then Clint comes out and cleverly inferences "go f&ck yourself," not just once, but twice! Ah, how the audience looked aghast at that gaff! Then Mitt actually said, "hell." Wow, another shocker!

Mitt actually spoke for quite a while and said nothing. Commentators will have to review tapes to look for something to comment on.

  16. "As if families aren't affected by climate change."

Oh, yes. After they send the kids off to school and mom goes through the bills and dad doesn't have a job to go to, it's all they talk about.

  17. Too bad they cancelled The Donald. He could hardly have been more embarrassing than Clint. Well, maybe he could on second thought.

  19. The Republicans have crafted their boogie man version of Obama and the congressional republicans have ensured that the economy stays in the crapper to keep that ghost alive.

Eastwood is talking to a ghost of his own party's creation.

  20. "During his first 18 months as governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney spent considerable time hammering out a sweeping climate change plan to reduce the state's greenhouse gas emissions."

"As staff briefed him on possible measures and environmentalists pressed him to act, Romney frequently repeated a central thought, people at those meetings said: That climate change is occurring, that the United States has the resources to handle its vast impact but that low-lying poor countries like Bangladesh would suffer greatly."

All those morons clapping and yapping, delighted in their ignorance, voting in November for a guy who believes climate change is real and is an actual threat to ocean levels.

  21. Geez. I didn't watch this live. I had already read articles, posts, and scores of tweets saying what a disaster it had been. And I was STILL shocked. Who says nothing unexpected happens at conventions anymore?

  22. Senility used to be the "polite" phrase for Alzheimer's disease. What a craven bunch of kiss-ass Republican operatives must have convened to call upon this elderly actor to, not sing the praises of Romney, but to mangle supposedly ironic commentary “directed” at an empty chair representing the President of the United States. It immediately occurred to me that poor old Mr. Eastwood, way past his prime, must talk to almost every empty chair within the home in which he now resides. Whether he lives alone or has many healthcare agents to prevent undue bruising, that must be one lonely, lonely home to which this addled man returns when he’s not out stumping for his own personal Herbert Hoover. The ghosts of the past can be some ornery opponents with whom to argue. I guess "Sunset Boulevard" just scratched the surface of declaring oneself an official has-been despite one's self-delusional view of where you stand. Shades of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" also ran through my mind as this Carmel, California easy living remnant of a man ambles along his "covertly" conservative pathway towards an imminent grave. So very sad to see that a man once so vital could be cajoled into partaking in this robotic romance with Romney. Well, I guess, even Leni Riefenstahl had her cinematically redeeming accomplishments.

  23. Just when I thought conventions were boring and predictable.... Wow. What a disaster for Romney, everyone is talking about Eastwood instead of the Romney speech.

    Posted by: Ken | Aug 31, 2012 1:26:55 AM

  24. Afterward, someone gave Clint what he thought was a microphone and started to talk into it. It turned out to be a dildo.

Larry King thought Clint was spry.
