Massive Great White Shark Washes Ashore in New England: VIDEO


A 13-foot Great White Shark weighing 1600 pounds washed ashore at a beach on the border of Rhode Island and Massachusetts over the weekend. Officials have not yet determined why the shark died. Nearby South Shore and Goosewing Beaches were closed as a precaution.

  2. Maybe I'm permanently jaded by Jaws, but as great white sharks go, that just doesn't seem very "massive" to me. ;)

  3. No it doesn't. Maybe they don't get the 17+ footers seen occasionally off the Calif coast. I would think a "massive" Great White would have to be over 20 feet long and weigh 4000 lbs.

  6. The Massachusetts and Rhode Island coast are very irregular, with many inlets and bays [Massachusetts is called the the 'Bay State', some call it the Gay State]. Sharks are looking for food [mostly seals, and there's a huge number of seals right now here in New England] and they come into these bays and inlets trolling for them. Sharks and other sea creatures get confused, and often get beached when the tides change.
