Conservative Ad Breaks 'Major Revelation' That GOP Loves Black People: VIDEO

Blackamericans

If you want to know what craven vote pandering looks like, look no further than this ad put out by the conservative super PAC Empower Citizens Network, which claims a "major revelation" in "news" that Republicans are for black Americans.

The ad then cites Republican Abraham Lincoln, a president from a different time and a man who has been dead for 147 years, as their character witness. It's an astonishing piece of work that's currently airing in Ohio.

Hunter at Daily Kos had this to say about this shameless display:

So the Republicans are now the party of civil rights, which is no doubt why they've been going on for decade after decade about states' rights and southern heritage and southern strategies and how the Confederate flag is great and putting up billboards warning minorities not to vote and … you know what? I don't even have the energy. And from the looks of the ad, neither do they.

If the GOP is so keen on using Lincoln and his anti-slavery politics as their platform, perhaps they should also start touting his advocacy of a progressive income tax?

  1. Luckily, even the stupidest black Americans generally aren't THAT dumb.

Individual black Americans may feel justified in voting Republican, but "Hey, Republicans really like you" probably isn't why.

  2. As I understand it the roles of the Democrats are Republicans were pretty much reversed for much of the 19th century.

  3. And George Wallace was a Democrat then ?

  4. Everything the ad says is true, which is why it's hilarious that they can't find a SINGLE example of pro-black Republicanism from the last 45 years -- their examples end with MLK in 1968 (!!!!)

The Republicans they speak of are not the Republican party of today: its venality since Nixon, made more crypto-religious under Reagan and Falwell, and unbearably seditious and racist since Gingrich and Rove.

  5. If you have to tell black Americans that you support them, then you probably don't. Come on Republicans; if you can't wear your support on your sleeve every day of your life, then you shouldn't even bother pandering for votes from this community.

The writing is on the wall and you've just called even more attention to it.

  6. "been going on for decade after decade about states' rights and southern heritage and southern strategies and how the Confederate flag is great"

You know, if Northeastern white liberals were as non-racist as they pretend to be and Southern white conservatives were as racist as those same Northeastern liberals claim they are, then you presumably would not see such massive numbers of African-Americans leaving the Northeast to re-settle in the South rather than the other way around, as the article linked below documents, would you?

  7. Uh-huh, just like Republicans are for Gay Americans. That's worked out so very well. I suppose since the Gays have the Log Cabin image, the Black Republicans could call themselves Slave Cabin Republicans.

Yes the ad is truthful to a point - that point being the passing of the civil rights act. That was more North vs. South than Republican vs. Democrat. Lyndon Johnson (a Democrat) was the leading push in the passage of the civil rights act. What the ad fails to mention is that Southern Democrats were like the Tea Party of their day - they were strident and increasingly out of touch with the majority in their party (the democrats) - Nixon courted them in his "Southern Strategy" and the racists have been firmly entrenched in the Republican Party ever since.

  9. Rick is a well-known racist, misogynist, femmaphobic, and generally bigoted troll here on Towleroad. Please don't address him in any way.

  10. Republicans like black people in their fields, in the kitchen, and on stage.

  12. You know that actors who do vaginal treatment and STD commercials get paid extra? I hope the nice looking actor pocketed a bunch for playing either an Uncle Tom or Carlton Banks!

  13. @POLYBOY, you forgot sports...

Doesn't that couple look like a beautiful 70s add for hair or teeth products?

That's about the same time the republicans started forgetting that black people, are not only people too, but they're Americans darn it!
This add pissed me off with its blunt level of outrageous hypocrisy.

  14. "Major Revelation" ya say...

Revelation is the right word. Revelation is defined as: The making known of a secret or the unknown.

And the GOP's love for blacks is certainly unknown.

  15. I agree with Johnny, desperation tactics, this looks like it was done in five minutes on a phone app. It is insulting to all minorities to consider that this particular audience could be so ignorant and uninformed, which they are certainly not. Kind of disgusting. Prove them wrong!

  16. By the way, I hope the couple in the stock photo (who were probably the very first image that came up in googling "afro-american couple") sue for defamation, or something…

  17. So sorry, Andrew, the Religious Right base of the Republican party has written out the part about his support for a progressive tax. They now believe that the Bible prohibits any such tax. In fact, they believe the Bible supports laissez-faire free-market capitalism. (I kid you not.)

  18. As a Black man the very suggestion that the GOP supports Black People, or any minority really, is disgusting. The sheer audacity they had to even try this, fills me with bile. I'm generally pretty easy going and pacifistic, but this angers me to no end.

  19. Wait. What did I just see? So I should vote republican because...im black & abraham lincoln was a republican? black ppl arent going to fall for this bulls#it.

  20. Actually, Diogenes, today's christians will tell you that Jesus was a small businessman, an independent contractor (a carpenter) and, as such, the bible favors free-enterprise.

  22. IN A WAY, I AGREE WITH Towleroad IN REFERENCE TO THIS ARTICLE. THE GOP SAYS, "It is the Party of Lincoln" - THAT IS F--KIN' BULL----!

I SUPPORT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY BECAUSE I HAVE MONEY IN MY POCKET; NOT, BECAUSE I AM A PITIFUL LITTLE "darkie!"

  23. "MARC C,"

NEGROES CAN BE REPUBLICAN. MY POINT IS, CONTEMPORARY REPUBLICANS WANT TO IGNORE THE FACT "Old Abe" BELIEVED IN KEEPING THE RACES SEPARATE.

AS CRAZY AS I AM ABOUT CAUCASIAN MALES, "Old Abe" IS AN ASS!

NORTHERN NEGROES RETURN TO THE SOUTH TO BE BURIED WITH THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS WHO STAYED HOME. NEGROES BELIEVE, "When the trumpet sounds," THEY WILL BE RE-UNITED WITH THEIR FAMILIES IN THE SO-CALLED, "afterlife."
