D.C. Radio Hosts Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin Spew Disgusting Transphobic Rant: AUDIO

An inexcusable exchange between 980am ESPN radio shosts Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin has folks calling for their suspension, and rightly so.

LudwigThe hosts unleashed a transphobic rant last Thursday about trans college basketball player Gabrielle Ludwig, Outsports reports:

They said transgender people should not be allowed to play sports. ”Whatever you’ve got to do to scratch that inner itch and quell those inner demons, that’s fine. But don’t go playing sports then. And don’t go playing sports saying, ‘but I’ve go the rights of everyone else.’”

They make fun of Ludwig’s appearance, including her biceps and tattoos. Clearly reacting to photographs, they expressed deep-seeded disgust at her appearance. “That could be a Russian chick,” they said as they cackled.

They referred to her as “he/she” and as “it.” “I think ‘it’ is the politically correct term.”

Listen to the rant, AFTER THE JUMP...

The hosts reportedly made a 10-second non-apology for their language.

Writes Outsports: "These men are a disgrace to their profession, and they should be suspended without pay."

The NCLR's Helen Carroll released a statement:

The horrific comments by ESPN’s Radio’s Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin show a level of disrespect and harmful rhetoric that is inexcusable.  They called Gabrielle Ludwig, transgender  California Community College student-athlete, “it”.  This and their entire transphobic rant shows a level of ignorance and just plain ‘meanness’ that I try to stay away from.  Unfortunately, the many transgender sports participants I have had the privilege to work with, are not shielded from hateful people such as Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin.  I would think that a sports network that espouses respect for LGBT people will see the harm that is occurring with this rant, be forthcoming with an apology and take immediate action against these two so-called sports radio professionals.

  1. The phrase is "deep-seated", not "deep-seeded".

  2. to:

If Mr. Czaban and Mr. Pollin think it's ok to call Gabrielle Ludwig "he/she" and "it" on a radio program, they are wrong.

They're entitled to their ignorant opinions, but that you would see fit to employ individuals that would spew them on the radio is hard to fathom.

Thank you for writing and sharing your opinion. We take every criticism and complaint very seriously. We strongly believe two of our employees crossed the line when they referred to Ms. Ludwig as “it” on their program last Thursday. Such intolerance and insensitivity will never be tolerated by this company. This situation will be handled swiftly and internally. Due to the nature of their contracts, we are not at liberty to publicly discuss any actions that were taken. I will always be available if you have comments in the future. My email is

  6. I sent this:

I am completely disgusted at the hate rant that your hosts Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin spewed last Thursday about trans college basketball player Gabrielle Ludwig. There wasn’t a redeeming thought in their rant and therefore I demand they be suspended without pay and issue a public apology not only to her, but to the entire trans community. At time where young people are committing suicide at an alarming rate because of anti-gay bully in school, trans individuals should not have to turn on the radio and listen to the bullying of these two. Czaban and Pollin’s comments come from a place of ignorance which in turn breeds hate and may cause either violence against the trans community or may cause someone struggling with their sexual identity to commit suicide.

I demand they be suspended without pay and for a month!

  7. Oh, look, it's the latest chapter in Andy Towle's pathetic campaign to convince trans activists that he will be an obedient boy and that he is sorry for calling out stereotyping on a soap opera several days ago.

Andy, you can never appease trans activists. You can write about "trans" issues all day long, they will just demand more.

These trans stories have nothing to do with gay people and trans activists have nothing to do with gay people, except to the extent that they are rabidly homophobic and consistently attack gay people.

  8. I live in the D.C. region and listen to the Sports Reporters show most weekday afternoons during my commute home. It's an entertaining, sometimes insightful way to break up the monotony we locals know as the Beltway. While i do like the show, I enjoy it much more when Czaban is absent and Andy has the show alone. That's because, quite frankly, Czaban is a pompous, inconsiderate ass, who constantly interrrupts and doesn't know when the keep his mouth shut. i expect him to do something like this but I'm really surprised at Andy Pollin. I mistakely believed he might have had more class. I respect their opinion on the matter but they have no right to spew such hate filled rhetoric on air. Czaban is insufferable and i really can't stand listening to the guy anyway, so it won't matter that i find another station to take my mind off the traffic. That means, heaven forbid, listening to Lavarr Arrington instead but that's okay. Despite that painful prospect i can't condone what these two have done. Nor, can i continue to listen to their show.

  9. @ Cal: That barely even makes sense. What does this have to do with a soap opera? It sounds like you've decided that anyone who is a proponent of trans issues is part of this shadowy, evil cabal of "trans activists". You then go on to ascribe a behavior to that entire group, I assume based on anecdotal evidence. Given how many trans folk identify as LGB (2 in 3, based on the studies I've seen), it's patently absurd to claim that trans folk are "rabidly homophobic" or that trans issues have nothing to do with LGB people. Even trans folk who actively speak up in pursuit of change are overwhelmingly allied with or a part of the LGB community, and your efforts to foster that divide are more based on your own bigotry or ignorance than they are on any logical basis.

  10. If this upsets trans activists, I am for it!

Towleroad, how about a story or two about how trans activists regularly stalk and threaten lesbians at their music festival in Michigan, or how they harass and threatened a lesbian attorney at a recent NYC lesbian march, or how the trans activist who was running a so-called LGBT group in Kentucky was forced to resign after violently threatening a lesbian over the internet? Huh? If you are going to be a trans news blog, how about covering all the trans news?

    Posted by: Suzanne | Dec 11, 2012 2:50:02 PM

  11. @Suzanne:

+1000. There has been no coverage in the gay blogosphere about the trans activist campaign against lesbians and lesbian activists. It is the greatest organized campaign of misogynistic violence in years and blogs like this one will not cover it. This has been going on for years and even when it has gotten violent, there seems to be a "gentlemen's agreement" between the gay blogosphere and the trans activists not to report it.

Apparently, trans activists targeted an author named Christine Benevuto just last week, disrupting a reading of her book and shouting violent threats to the point wher the police had to be called. They also firebombed a Wells Fargo bank in Oregon a few months ago. For some reason, they claimed that Wells Fargo had something to do with the conviction of yet another violent transgender on a homicide charge. As a result of the firebombing, Wells Fargo cancelled its participation in the gay pride parade in Portland, even though gay people had nothing to do with any of it. Once again, LGBs associating with unhinged trans activists yielded nothing but grief and setbacks for LGBs.

Why isn't Towleroad covering any of this? Is Andrew Towle supporting this bullying and violence or he is just a gutless coward so invested in the bogus "LGBT" concept to deal with the truth?

Anyway, check out more information at some of these sites. You will find coverage of the Benevuto harassment and the Wells Fargo bombing on these sites:

  12. every gay man that refuses to stand up and support his transgendered or transitioning brothers and sisters is a coward who deserves every ounce of anti-gay prejudice they'll experience in life.

  13. Hey Suzanne and Jeff, do you have any links that corroborate these stories? Links to real news sites, not tumblrs where people can post any old thing as fact? Because insofar as I have visited the links you posted, Jeff, they use a lot of the same anti-trans rhetoric you hear from far-right social conservative groups like NOM and the AFA, who are attempting to demonize LGBT folk. So are you a duck, or do you just look, swim, and quack like one?

    Posted by: TheDrDonna | Dec 11, 2012 3:53:06 PM

  14. I sent an email and received a message back that they had been removed from ESPNs Sports Reporters Program.

    Posted by: rob | Dec 11, 2012 4:40:45 PM

  15. The bigotry is your own, as you excuse and deny violence against lesbians and gay men. Those sites have plenty of links to all the horror stories. The attack on Benevenuto has links to the newspaper, the Amherst Bulletin. Did you even bother to read these sites?

The online harassment of various targets, nearly all women, have links to the actual harassment. The Wells Fargo bombing was covered in the Oregon press and you can find those stories with about 30 seconds of work. You are clearly not interested in links. You are interested in excusing and denying violence against women by deranged trans activists.

Also, look at the comment right above yours for an example of trans homophobia. LittleKiwi is a gender-fixated crossdresser, as can be seen on his horrifying blog, which itself is like something out of Silence of the Lambs. He openly states that the worth of gay and lesbian people as human beings is determined by labor they perform for trans activists. If they fail to do the things that trans activists want, they should be discriminated against and bashed as gay people. That's an excellent example of the bullying, demented, homophobic, and violent
mindset of trans activists. And you don't even need a link to see it.

    Posted by: Jeff | Dec 11, 2012 5:02:16 PM

  16. Hehe thanks, Jeff. Your meandering, accusatory, and vicious response is a much better argument for why people don't listen to you than anything I could have put together. The fact that you failed to provide links, when you could easily have if they were so readily available on the propaganda sites you listed, also demonstrates how little fact there is to your claims.

  17. Here we go again with the Lesbian, Transgendered groups lowering the politically correct boom on free speech. WTF.

  18. I am so sick of the gays and lesbians and the "in-betweens" dictating what everyone else can listen to. Time for a revolution.

    Posted by: Larry | Dec 11, 2012 6:32:54 PM

  19. As I said, those tumblr sites are filled with links to all the news stories I mentioned. I have provided them. You just won't acknowledge reality. Which is par for the course for a trans.

  20. Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin are no way professional in what they do... They have marked a new name for themselves and it not such a good term... They did this on purpose and they are professionals?? Professional pricks and then some!
