RoadBishop in charge of Illinois priest who called 911 after getting stuck in handcuffs defends him, releases statement: "The unfortunate result of such patterns of life—in no way limited to the experience of Catholic priests—is that persons often find themselves seeking patterns of 'self-medication' to soothe emotional turmoil. Alcoholism, the use of illicit drugs, compulsive gambling, sexual acting out and the use of pornography are some of the more common manifestations, none of which were present in this situation. Instead, according to the clinical therapist, Father Donovan is suffering from a psychological condition that manifests itself in self-bondage as a response to stress.* The clinical therapist also confirms that the strict absence of illicit sexual behaviors, relationships, and patterns reveal that this self-bondage is to be understood as non-sexual in nature."

  1. "...self-bondage as a response to stress.* The clinical therapist also confirms that the strict absence of illicit sexual behaviors, relationships, and patterns reveal that this self-bondage is to be understood as non-sexual in nature."

What a crock of Bullpuckey!!!!! And if that is what the clinical therapist actually told the bishop, he/she has violated patient/client privileges and should be disciplined for doing so. And the bishop should be disciplined for making it public if it was disclosed to him in the first place. This all stinks of a PR cover-up.

How 'bout some words as to the stress of continual denial of one's sexuality? The R.C. church as an institution is mentally-ill on this subject and needs intervention.

  2. A giant load of horsesh*t from the Church, yet again. I wonder how long it took their team of guys in dresses to think that up?

    Very creative, guys, kudos.

  3. Only that line of crap could come from the catholic church. It's the typical "no, no, no, there's no issue here, nothing to see, just ignore it and it will go away" bull they have been chanting for years. Do they think we are idiots?

  4. @JOHNNY: it happened November 28th. So it took the catholic brain trust almost 2 months to come up with that line of stupidity. Although, I give them some credit, that's fast compared to other things the church has been in embarresed by. It took them how many years to actually admit there was a problem with priests who were molesting kids? They kept sweeping that under the rug and denying there was a problem for decades.

  5. Adele's trying to EGOT before she even gets the O. That kind of makes me want her to lose.

  6. Self-bondage sounds pathetic. Being handcuffed and gagged by someone he just met would seem a whole lot less pathetic.

  7. The bishop's reaction is really funny. Really, it is so much better that there was nobody else there? But when do you ever get anything intelligent from a Roman Catholic bishop?

  8. How did he hide the dildos and lube if he was handcuffed? Got to hand it to those priests, they are crafty!

  9. The thing about female pop singers today is that a lot of them are fake. From lip synching to Photo Shop, they trade on an immense illusion. I think Adele referred to this a few months back when she said that some of the female pop singers today do not look anything like their photographs in the magazines.

If, as being widely reported, Beyonce did fake her singing of the National Anthem, it would not surprise me.

  10. Gyllenhaal - Jackman: damn! Seeing those two bearded wonders would have been wonderful.

The "911" priest: I suspect the priest had to OK the release of the diagnosis as part of the PR campaign. I hope one of the mental health experts on TR would speak to the plausibility of the existence of the disorder of non-sexual self-bondage. OTOH - it does sound like the typical RC priest who does not have the charism of celibacy yet agrees to be celibate. (I'm reminded of a class of pre-Vatican II saints - virgin and martyr - which seems redundant.)

  11. Self-flagellation is big thing in some extremist Catholic circles. The DaVinci Code didn't make that part up about Opus Dei.

    Posted by: Steve | Jan 22, 2013 5:31:13 PM

  12. Handcuffs are not involved in any self-flaggelation that a mainstream parish priest in Illinois might be involved in . Opus Dei my ass!

NEWSFLASH: The Roman Catholic Church hierarchy will cover up and lie to protect their priests. Their motive is to keep the dollars coming in to pay for their diabolical battle against gay rights -- ironic if you've ever been to a Roman Catholic rectory or convent.

The poor Roman Catholics who remain are so brainwashed that they still entrust their children to them.

Dear Jesus, save us from your followers.

  13. You can hear the sighs of relief from across the Catholic world. It was just a ball-gag, not a stiffie.

  14. Homosexuality as an intrinsic disorder, the condition of self-bondage to relieve stress....what's next from these RC bishops? Pedophilia as a way of loving the inner child?

  15. "such patterns of life" ???

Oh, he must be referring to the twisted Roman Catholic practice of theoretical "celibacy" and denial of natural behavioral practices insisted upon by Papal decree.

Yeah I would get weird if I lived in denial of self and obvious reality, too.
