We've seen too many young people, particularly with backgrounds like Te'o's, growing up in the conservative, anti-gay Mormon church, pushed against the wall by homophobia and going to extreme lengths in denying their homosexuality, sometimes even harming themselves."

  1. So many gays do it bb? Sad. I knew many, but so many? I was very young when the epidemic came to everyone's attention. It was scary and horrible and made me practice safe s. I guess those guys doing it bb simply don't care. Sad again.

  2. @matt26 I know, unbelievable isn't it?

Anyone stupid enough to bareback while having anonymous sex pretty much deserves AIDS.

  3. The study on barebacking only looked at gay men who use hookup apps.

That said, these numbers are mindboggling. And the "prevention experts" quoted in the article are worse than worthless. "We can't be judgemental." No, nothing could be worse than that. 30,000 new HIV cases among gay or bi men every year in the U.S., but nothing could be worse than being "judgemental."

  4. Matt,
Not being judgmental is one of the most important parts of providing health care. If you perceive that someone is judging you or will judge you, you won't even bother with them. Being judgmental makes it even harder to reach people. So be as judgmental as you want but don't expect anyone to return to the clinic where they know they'll be judged.

Gay youth have higher incidences of STDs and HIV in part because they are too afraid to come out to their doctors and thus get appropriate health related education. Judgment and the fear of judgment results in worse health outcomes. You're not helping anyone by rising around on your high horse.

  5. Yeah it bears repeating that the 47% statistic pertains to guys WHO USE HOOK-UP APPS. It is most definitely NOT 47% of all gay men. I know plenty of guys (myself included) who stay far, far away from cesspools like Grindr. Some of us just aren't attracted to the prospect of hot action with irresponsible and/or closeted fellows.

  6. Well I'm never having sex again.
I'd fully support a ban on bareback porn. Gay people fetishise barebacking a lot these days, it's disgusting. Do you see a huge emphasis on barebacking in straight porn? No, not at all, but in gay porn all the studios are basically saying, "BAREBACK SEX IS HOT. IT'S BETTER. YOU LIKE IT"

  7. More than half of today's young gay men will be HIV-positive by age sixty. This is exactly why.

    Posted by: MGC | Jan 18, 2013 5:25:01 PM

  8. MGC:

That's BS. I'm totally against the hookup apps and the hypersexualized gay culture created in the 70s and which continues today. But it isn't true that more than half of today's young gays will be HIV positive by age 60. In 30 years of AIDS, the seropositivity rate has stabilized at about 12 percent nationally. Appallingly high and unacceptable, but stable since the late 80s. It isn't going up to 50 percent between now and 2050.

    Posted by: Bill | Jan 18, 2013 5:42:37 PM

  9. Bill, you're not addressing what MGC posted. He's saying that an individual gay man, over time, has more than a 50% rate of becoming HIV positive. You can't refute that by saying the overall rate, for all gay men, no matter how old, is at 12% (and anyway the CDC says 20%, not 12%). You have to look at what the rate is among 60-year-olds, and whether THAT rate is increasing or not.

    Posted by: Matt | Jan 18, 2013 5:58:13 PM

  10. Being judgmental makes it even harder to reach people.

We're already not reaching people, obviously.

Anyway, John, since your school of thought on public health has been such a total disaster for gay men, why should we listen to you? Your methods -- not being judgemental, etc. -- are not working. We can see all around us that they are failing. The evidence is very clear that we should not listen to you.

I agree we ought to ban bareback porn and I think we ought to crack down on solicitations for it on hookup apps and Craigslist, etc. If services are enabling this behavior, let's go after them. Grindr is no better than cigarette companies in terms of the public health outcomes.

  11. "So many gays do it bb?"

Your point? 99.99% of us are here because some straight couple bare-fronted. And where do all those abortions come from, hmm?

This isn't a sexual orientation thing. It's a human thing. If we could get humans to stop banging each other for a year, we could probably wipe out STDs almost entirely.

    Posted by: Randy | Jan 18, 2013 6:19:21 PM

  12. Bareback and b&^$% and moan about having AIDS later? Real smart.

  15. "This isn't a sexual orientation thing. It's a human thing. If we could get humans to stop banging each other for a year, we could probably wipe out STDs almost entirely."

    It's an anal thing.

Anal intercourse is twenty times more efficient than vaginal in transmitting HIV, and that's before you take into account the "versatility" inherent in gay sex (think about it -- if a man could get HIV from a woman as easily as a woman can get it from a man, there would be a lot more heterosexuals infected) and the high levels of promiscuity and infidelity among gay men.

If you are going to do anal and ESPECIALLY if you are going to do it as a "bottom", you must use a condom, correctly, every single time -- and you will probably be fine. Otherwise, you are courting infection with HIV.

    Posted by: MGC | Jan 18, 2013 11:14:45 PM

  16. @Matt:

The CDC does not say that the rate is 20%. That was a study of several large cities, not the nation as a whole. When you look at all 50 states and not just cities like NYC and SF, it is 12%.

Also, the chance that any individual young gay might seroconvert is not the same as the overall rate of infection in that population. The comment above said that more than half of today's young gays will become infected. That is BS.
