Pod of Killer Whales Trapped in Sea Ice in Northern Quebec: VIDEO

Whales

A pod of approximately a dozen killer whales has become trapped under sea ice with a breathing hole only several dozen feet across near the nothern Quebec village of Inukjuak. The situation appears dire.

The mayor of Inukjuak is calling for an icebreaker for help but it's unclear if it can help them in time.

Mayor Peter Inukpuk urged the Canadian government Wednesday to send an icebreaker as soon as possible to crack open the ice and help them find open water. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans said it is sending officials to assess the situation.

"Fisheries and Oceans Canada is assessing the situation and are exploring every possible option, but will only be in a position to determine what - if anything - can be done once our specialists arrive on site," spokesman Frank Stanek said in a statement

A hunter first spotted the pod of about a dozen trapped whales Tuesday at the hole, which is on the eastern shore of the Hudson Bay. Inukjuak is about 1,500 kilometers (900 miles) north of Montreal.

I hope someone helps these beautiful animals. They are obviously desperate for any break they can get.

  1. Step One: rent Big Miracle starring Drew Barrymore.

Step Two: Duplicate, without the fromage.

  2. Step one: Let them die for the stupid choices that allowed them to get stuck in the first place and stop thinking humans and their dumb sentimental whims are more important than the processes of natural selection that allowed them to exist in the first place.

Step two: There is no step two. There IS NO STEP TWO!! :D

  7. Yes, to hear the Global Warming people talk the people in the north should be basking in the sun drinking margaritas’ on the beaches as all the northern ice is supposed to be about gone.

  8. Did you Global Warming Deniers even bother reading this story? It's 900 miles NORTH of Montreal! That's almost the arctic! And it's January...

  11. Due to public outcries here in Canada the Feds are sending help in as of today. Killer Whales are not common in this part of the country so that is probably why they are trapped. Go online to either CBC or CTV to watch the story.

  12. Odd that this post would incite the stupidest, most heartless comments I've seen here, and I have seen a few.

  13. I have to agree(mostly)with Blake. The animals are beyond their usual northern range. Whether they chose to be there or became confused is unfortunate, but their deaths would be a natural event. There's nothing "heartless" about admitting that. Our human emotions are aroused, of course.

Remember the grand hoopla a few years ago when two actual whales were trapped in ice and hundreds of people descended on the scene to help, including ice breakers? I thought then that it would have been better for the locals to be left alone to harvest an unexpected bounty of food. And I've always suspected that the freed animals fell prey to a lurking Japanese factory ship that transformed them into product for THEIR home market.

  14. Let natural selection and nature take its course! The Canadian Government, my government does not need to be spending money on this!

  15. The media are reporting that the whales are now free and have made it to the open sea. Shifting winds moved the ice, opened more air holes, and allowed the whales to get to open sea.

Thanks to all the commenters for reminding me that Towleroad has the most vile and and deranged commenters in the gay blogosphere. And this is true of the commenting on any topic.

  16. The reported outcome was done by shifting winds, natural forces, without human intervention. Great. That's the way it should be.

  18. They must have been in a panic to have to surface that frequently. Poor critters.

  19. I am so happy they are ok. Very upsetting to see this morning I am overjoyed!!!!

  20. I don't understand Tim's comment. Does he seriously think there's no difference between necessary compassion for people and misplaced concerns about wild animals?
I would be more alarmed about elephants and rhinos being slaughtered for ivory and supposedly rejuvenating horns. THAT is not a natural situation.
    There's something seriously amiss here.

  21. I saw the film last year from the 70's where whales were trapped. Hopefully these will be saved!!
