Gay-Friendly Scouting Organization Reports Massive Growth

Navigators

The gay-friendly scouting alternative to the Boy Scouts, called Navigators USA, has doubled its numbers in one year, Mother Jones reports:

In March, 2012, the Navigators had 19 chapters, but today, there are about 45 chapters across 21 states, according to Tony Porterfield, a chapter leader in Los Altos. Bossert adds that they are growing at a rate of about 2 chapters per month, with each chapter having an average of 8-12 children, so he estimates that there are up to 600 boys and girls enrolled in the program. For the most part, Navigators participate in the same kinds of activities that Boy Scouts do: Camping, organic farming, hiking, tie dying, excursions to museums, and community service. Freed says the only event his son misses from the Boy Scouts is the Pinewood Derby, where scouts build and race model cars (Freed points out that "as a parent doing much of the work on it, I do not miss it.")

But there is one big difference: The Navigators' Moral Compass (left), which expresses the group's philosophy that members shouldn't be discriminated against over gender, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation. Bossert says the organization has openly gay chapter leaders, as well as board leaders and co-members.

As for other inclusive alternatives to the BSA, there is also the Baden-Powell Service Association (BPSA), and Camp Fire.

  2. This is what should have been done long ago. Rather than trying to change a private organization that has their own set of values and having a huge fight about it, go and set up another organization that reflects the values of those who participate. It's a free country. Don't force the Boy Scouts to be something that they aren't...instead, set up this alternative, and put energy into making it a great organization for boys. The Left wouldn't inspire so much anger on the Right if they would just learn to do what this fine organization is doing here. Bravo for the Navigators!

  3. Awesome! Maybe enough boy scouts will leave the BSA and weaken the organization until it has no choice but to change its archaic ways...

Oh, f*** you. Don't blame the victims. "The left" hoped that the American public would eventually force this group to do what's right, not realizing that 99% of American parents are heterosexual and don't f***in' care enough to actually DO anything about it. "The left" also hoped our politicians would eventually realize that it just isn't f***in' right to use tax dollars to support an organization that doesn't let gay Americans join.

  5. This is great! I love it. Just when the Boy Scouts finally get the message and change, they will find that everyone has already left.

The only people they will have left are the same old homophobes who will be angry at having "caved" to the gays. They get the worst of both worlds. Pity, isn't it!

  6. Jon: Great advice. I'm gonna remember: The next time a restaurant refuses to serve me, I'll just open my own restaurant. The next time a hotel won't put up my partner and me, I'll just buy a hotel. The next time a private hospital refuses to allow me visitation rights in defiance of a federal order, I'll just pay some kid's way through medical school, send him to business school after, and help him set up a clinic to look after us. It's a free country, after all.

  7. It's awesome news, but 600 kids is still a miniscule amount compared to the millions in the Scouts plus many other organizations that are also similarly anti-gay. It's good news, though, for parents who want their kids to enjoy the noble and life-educating values scouting provides but without homophobic and religious-based bigotry. And given the group is seeing consistent rise in numbers we can only hope that it continues growing in popularity and there are Navigator USA chapters in all states in the near future!

  8. What's nice is that by not discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation, sex, or absence of religion, Navigators should be eligible to move into those places where BSA bigots have been ineligible, and benefit from those $1 rents.

  9. How awesome! I live for the day when this will happen here and we can all break into "God Bless America"

  10. knot tying, NOT tie dying.

KNOT TYING - square knot, 8-knot, sheepshank, bowline, simple knot, etc.

TIE DYING, tying and dyeing a white cotton T-shirt with bright colors.

    Knot tying = Boy Schots
    Tie dying = hippies
