Rocky is going to be a Broadway musical.

The Hollywood Reporter:

The stage incarnation of Rocky brings together Tony Award-winning book writer Thomas Meehan (The Producers, Hairspray) with composer Stephen Flaherty and lyricist Lynn Ahrens, whose many collaborations include the musical Ragtime.

Directing the production is Alex Timbers, currently represented in New York with the David Byrne-Fatboy Slim musical Here Lies Love and the musical-play hybrid Peter and the Starcatcher. Fight choreography is by Steven Hoggett (Once), with dance choreography by Kelly Devine (Rock of Ages).

“I couldn’t be more proud or more excited about this production and how my original story of Rocky Balboa has been brought to spectacular life onstage,” said Stallone, who penned the screenplay of the beloved 1976 feature that spawned four sequels.

  1. What the hell happened to Sylvester Stallone's eyebrows? Geez. Are those two things alive or what.

  2. This is why Broadway is dead with its constant cannibalization of old movies. I suppose somebody could produce "The Exorcist: the Musical" or "The Elephant Man: the Musical" and people would still line up to buy tickets because of name recognition.

    "Brokeback Mountain: the Musical"
    "Schindler's List: the Musical"

    Broadway is a corpse.

  3. @will

though I would love to see "Sybil: The Musical" with music by Sondheim. LOL.

  6. I *might* sit through that if someone paid me, I was on a ton of drugs, and I could laugh really loudly.

    He's spooky looking.

Don't be silly, the eyebrows are needed to distract from the pornstache.

    @Will
I regret to inform you the "Schindler's List: The Musical" has already been done. See http://youtu.be/K-dTnU5uOsA to hear Liam Neeson featured in the showstopper, "I Could Have Done More."

  9. @Will--I'm still waiting for Julie Taymor's adaptation of Pixar's "Cars."

  10. His Mom spent a lot of time on his brows, especially after the,"Cut me", scene in "Rocky" messed up their alignment. That and his massive reconstructive facelift are responsible for the "surprise" look.

  11. I've seen videos of the german production. it's actually pretty freakin' great. there's a lot of really interesting use of live multimedia.

  12. It's been surprisingly successful here in Germany, and not just with general audiences, but with critics as well.

Before you marinade your comments in cynicism, why not give it a chance, guys?

  13. I loathe Stallone, so "Rocky" without him in it is, for me, a major win! And considering I just saw "Flashdance: the Musical" last night in Portland, I can now say with assurance that rock bottom has been reached, and we have nowhere to go but up. (But I still love you, Jakob Karr!)

Yes, it would be nice to have another Broadway smash not based on a movie besides "The Book of Mormon," but doesn't seem to be in the cards for the near future.
