Paula Deen Releases Two Statements Apologizing for Racist Remarks, Removes One: VIDEO

Deen

Paula Deen released two videos this afternoon apologizing for racist remarks she made in a deposition (transcript) for a discrimination lawsuit brought by her former employee Lisa Jackson in which she admitted to using the N-word, making racist and anti-semitic jokes, and having an interest in hiring black waiters to look like "slaves" for a "southern style plantation wedding." The videos came after a day in which she failed to show up for a segment on the Today show with Matt Lauer.

She has now been dropped by the Food Network.

In the deposition she is asked to explain whether she uses jokes in a mean way:

Lawyer: What about jokes, if somebody is telling a joke that's got --
Deen: It's just what they are, they're jokes.
Lawyer: Okay. Would you consider those to be using the N word in a mean way?

Deen: That's -- that's kind of hard. Most -- most jokes are about Jewish people, rednecks, black folks. Most jokes target -- I don't know. I didn't make up the jokes, I don't know. I can't -- I don't know.
Lawyer: Okay.
Deen: They usually target, though a group. Gays or straights, black, redneck, you know, I just don't know. I can't, myself, determine what offends another person.

P_deenOne of Deen's apology videos was removed from YouTube shortly after being posted, after it reportedly received hundreds of critical comments. It has been mirrored by other sites and reposted.

Says Deen in that video:

"I want to apologize to everybody for the wrong that I’ve done. I want to learn and grow from this. Inappropriate and hurtful language is totally, totally unacceptable."

In the second, longer video, Deen adds:

”I’ve spent the best part of 24 years to help myself and others. Your color of your skin, your religion, your sexual preference does not matter."

Watch both clips, AFTER THE JUMP...

  4. Too bad SNL is on summer hiatus. There must be a tape or something out there for this to blow up like it did. If so, you know TMZ is bidding for it.

  5. LOL...I've watched these two videos about 4 times now. Hilarious.

"...from the deepest of my..." I thought she was going to say, "bowels".

  6. Cue the backlash from conservatives saying she's a casualty of political correctness.

  7. Just like a drunk driver doesn't realize that
they are "one of those people" until they get the cuffs slapped on them, racists, bigots and haters don't think it's about them until they get busted. Imagine, all that time you thought it was funny and not at all hurtful! I can't even wrap my brain around the pornography at the workplace aspect of this.

  8. Whatever. She's an old woman who was raised in a time and place were this was done. She doesn't go parading and doing it now, and I won't lie and pretend like everyone on the planet hasn't don't the same in their life a few times to make myself feel faux outrage. She's a cook, not a diplomat, so who cares?

  9. I kind of liked watching her and her sons when her shows first started airing several years ago. But as I watched I noticed that she threw around the word "sissy" all the time when she wanted to say her sons were being weak. I stopped watching her then and there. People said I was being overly sensitive, but I grew up in that part of the country, and it's not a big leap from "sissy" to black jokes and Jew jokes, especially when used by mothers to warn her sons that they aren't being "manly" enough for her.

  10. They're down home bigots, just like everyone her age in Georgia that is white. Just saying, she's probably a 100 times better than most in Savannah because she has more contact with "other peoples" from film and entertainment.

  11. No Paula Deen coverage willing to mention that she campaigned for Democrats, including Barack Obama.

  12. FWIW- Savannah is diverse for a Southern town. And places like Savannah, Asheville and Charleston are pretty much the cream of the crop in Southern tolerance. Its not like she is living in Smithfield, NC in the sixties when they had KKK billboards leading into town.

If we're okay with her tossing around the N word we really can't complain when black churches rally against gay rights since that is part of their environment...

  13. LOL @"No Paula Deen coverage willing to mention that she campaigned for Democrats, including Barack Obama."

'Cause she wanted to dress him up like a slave and have him serve her and her guess...LOL.

This tops off my Friday afternoon. Thank you, Andy. LOL

  14. It's very sad that she did not realize that what she said was so cringe worthy racist, but at least she is now trying to understand and evolve.

  15. I personally don't think Paula is a racist. She made some bad choices but to call her an out right racist is a bit of a stretch.
If she were advocating segregation or burning down black churches, then I can see the racists card. We ALL have said or done things that others are offended by. It happens. Move on.

  16. I don't see what the problem is?

Black people call each other niggaz all the time.

Just go to any black twitter account

  17. "Black people call each other niggaz all the time."

All right, then I'll call you one. Otey?

  19. almost feel sorry for her; if you're in the public eye in any way, you need to keep your prejudices at home

  20. "...sexual *preference*".... ?? Well, seems like she needs a bit more education than just not using a racial ephithet

    Posted by: Mike | Jun 21, 2013 6:10:07 PM

  21. Her goose is cooked and she has no one to blame but herself. All you see now is a fingernail grasp at trying to save it. It is over for her. She has no credibility and needs to pack it up and go home. She's had a financially fruitful career but it is over. Buh bye!

  22. Don't be too sure she's gone forever from Food Network. If they can "rehabilitate" Robert Irvine, they can "rehabilitate" anyone.

  23. Wow - playing off that she is old as a reason to cut her some slack. My mom is 83 and every time she says something stupid I call her on it. Her response always is: "I'm old, it's hard to change." And my response is always: "Your old, you should have been the first to change."

Granted, I get no where with her...but my point is, age is no excuse, geography is no excuse. You know what...? There IS no excuse.

If the excuses are she's old and grew up in the South, then she represents the type of person to fall back on "free speech" and bad-mouthing "political correctness." Well, guess what...free speech has consequences. Sorry you lost your revenue from the Food Network. I'm sure you can get on local cable in Georgia and do book signings in Missippie...so you won't be destitute.

  24. I still love you Paula Dean.

  25. I never could stand her anyway. As a Southerner her fake, over-the-top cornpone accent just set my teeth on edge. (And no she doesn't always talk like that.) The local cable company ran an ad with her baring those huge white Chiklet teeth and braying "Frum MAH fammly to YUUUUUURS!" that drove me up the friggin' wall!

I've always heard from people who are in a position to know that one of her sons, the shorter one, is gay BTW. Not that it matters, just throwing it out there.
