Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) Dies at 89

Lautenberg

LGBT ally Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), the Senate's oldest member (above, with Justice Elena Kagan), has died at 89, North Jersey reports:

The oldest member of the Senate, Lautenberg had struggled with health problems since late last year, when he missed several weeks of votes because of what he said was flu and bronchitis.

The death of Lautenberg, a Democrat who was the longest-serving senator in New Jersey history, creates a vacancy that Governor Christie, a Republican, will fill.

Lautenberg returned to Washington in February and announced he would not see k re-election in 2014, but hoped to complete a series of accomplishments before his term ended.

Lautenberg also struggled with B-cell lymphoma. In June 2010 he made an announcement to Garden State Equality that he was cancer-free.

RIP.

  1. He held on as long as he could. What a great man...gave so many years to public service when he didn't have to. What a great man.

  2. I'm surprised this hasn't hit Google News yet. Scoop goes to TR!

Lautenberg was a nasty hardball campaigner, and his erstwhile replacement, Corey Booker, looks to be much better.

  4. Sorry to hear about Senator Lautenberg's passing. He was truly an ally to the LGBT community WAY before others were.

  5. Lautenberg was a great senator and did a lot for our community, but I think he really did a disservice by running for the Senate in 2008. At the time I thought he should have gracefully stepped aside and let someone else run. The result of that decision will result in New Jersey having a Rethuglican senator for over a year because Chris Christie now gets to name an interim replacement.

  6. My guess is that Christie will appoint either perennial loser Doug Forrester or Dem. Senate leader Sweeney. Sweeney would be the clever choice since it blocks Booker and gets Sweeney out of the state Senate.
