NHL Star Tyler Seguin Under Fire for Homophobic Tweet He Blames on 'Hackers'

Seguin

Tyler Seguin, a former Boston Bruins player who was acquired last week by the Dallas Stars, is under fire for a tweet he sent out on Saturday night that he blamed on hackers.

Tweet_seguinSeguin's tweet, since deleted, read: "Only steers and queers in Texas, and I'm not a cow."

The Dallas Stars reacted immediately, distancing themselves from Seguin's tweet:

“In no way, shape or form does the Dallas Stars organization condone or agree with the message that was sent out through Tyler Seguin’s Twitter feed last night. We’ve addressed the issue directly with Tyler and we’ll continue to work on educating our players regarding the importance of their conduct on all forms of social media.”

Seguin later announced he's taking a break from Twitter, but blamed the statement on "hackers":

After repeated attempts by "hackers" to try to damage my reputation I have decided to shut down my twitter account for a while.— Tyler Seguin (@tylerseguin92) July 07, 2013

SI.com says it isn't the first time Seguin has made a similar mistake: "Earlier this year, he added 'no homo' to a description of his reaction after listening to a song written by his roommate. He later apologized for using that phrase."

  1. But I thought "queer" was trendy amongst gay New Yorkers. Sudden change of heart?

  2. can we please focus on the people who make actual homophobic comments and not the ones who quote movies?

  3. Maybe he's just a big fan of The Revolting Cocks.

  4. I'm sure there are more than a few Texans who are also offended by Twitter users who think steers are cows.

  5. Kind of like a Paula Deen remark. Fire his ass.

  6. @ Jason - Many consider it to be a political term. It really depends on who is using the term and how they are using it.

It's sort of like the phrase "Mama's basement dweller." Jason, you really need to get out of the basement and get some. The question is who would be stupid enough to give it up to you.

  7. This was a free country with freedom of speech.

  8. Move on, folks.

  9. Why do so many people not understand the concept of "freedom of speech?" While you are free to express your opinions, you are not absolved from suffering the consequences of said opinions... especially if they are aired in a public forum.

  10. This seems to indicate that he has been castrated. Look it up.

  11. The new (wait, now old) PR strategy is the hacked excuse for all these guys. He wasn't hacked.

  12. If it's only steers and queers and he's not a cow, isn't he saying he's queer?

  13. nooe: Freedom of speech doesn't mean no consecuences.

  14. If he's calling himself a queer then I would have a hard time believing that he actually did send it. Either way, who cares.

  18. Jason, honey, the only person who can call this gay New Yorker a queer is another queer, not some 2nd rate NHL has-been player. Oh, by the way, kiss my queer @$$.

  19. @Mike in the tundra; No, you are wrong. The "Q" word is a hateful slur when used to refer to gay people, no matter who is using it. You do not take back language by inviting everyone to use it, dumb a$$. You take back language by removing it from the common lexicon. The generation of gay people who have invited straight people to use it have not taken back the language; they have instead humiliated themselves and the entire community.

  20. That's a quotation from a movie. If I quote the Silence of the Lambs, does that make me a serial killer?

  21. Wow, he's got a malevolent smile. That looks like the kind of boy who used to torture animals when he was younger.

  22. It is likely that he put "hackers" in quotes because one of his buddies grabbed his phone while he wasn't looking and posted the tweet. This is at least the second time a tweet has shown up on his feed that could be interpreted as him coming out (as for not knowing cows and steers aren't the same thing, you really think some kid growing up in suburban Toronto would likely know the difference?). Wil Wheaton's twitter feed is often invaded by his son Ryan. It happens. However, if I had millions on the line, I'd be dumping any friends who can't keep their hands off my phone.

  23. Would the translation of this quip be that Tyler is queer?

    Posted by: Jon | Jul 8, 2013 12:44:37 PM

  24. I'm in the same boat as many other guys. Doesn't that quote mean he's queer? I know that wasn't his intention, so I'm extra confused.

    Posted by: Robert | Jul 8, 2013 12:59:20 PM

  25. @ NullNaught - no one has invited straight people to use the word, but we are free to use the word with one another. I prefer it over the alphabet soup of LGBTQIA. The bottom line is you can tell straight people not to use the word queer, but it might be wise not to tell other gay people not to use it. We're not trying to take back the language. We're giving a new definition to it.
