RoadSocial Security invites gay couples to apply for benefits: "Though this move does not constitute final guidelines on whether individuals in states without marriage equality will be eligible for Social Security benefits, it does allow couples to apply for those benefits and have their claims 'held' until the agency issues further guidance – meaning that they will not lose out on benefits that accrue during the time while the agency is developing its standards."

The idea is that financial stress monopolizes thinking, making other calculations slower and more difficult, sort of like the effects of going without sleep for a night. And this money-and-brain crunch applies, albeit to a smaller degree, to about 100 million Americans who face financial squeezes, say the team of economists and psychologists who wrote the study published in Friday's issue of the journal Science."

RoadDavid Hockney's assistant died after drinking bleach: "Dominic Elliott, 23, was high on ecstasy and cocaine when he walked into a bathroom at the house in Bridlington, east Yorkshire, and apparently began drinking from a bottle of bleach filled with a 95% concentration of sulphuric acid. Hockney's former long-term partner, John Fitzherbert, drove Elliott to hospital in Scarborough, but he is thought to have died during the 45-minute journey.Fitzherbert, in his 60s, told the hearing in Hull how Elliott spent the day before his death watching films, taking drugs and drinking alcohol. At one point, having realised that Hockney had left the house, the young man got out of bed, laughed hysterically and threw himself 10ft off a first-floor balcony."

  2. Well I'm glad Hockney's young friend wasn't exhibiting any obviously suicidal or erratic behavior. Maybe they could have tried to help him?

Also, coke kills the effects of ecstasy. What a waste.

  3. Dominic Elliot sounds like an idiot who died because he was an idiot.
    Wasted life for sure.

  4. "This article was amended on 30 August 2013. An earlier version said Dominic Elliott died after drinking bleach, and went on to say it was a "bottle of bleach filled with a 95% concentration of sulphuric acid". While the fatal drink was sometimes referred to as "bleach" during the inquest hearing, it was a sulphuric-acid-based drain cleaner; bleach does not contain sulphuric acid. The earlier version also said that John Fitzherbert was in his 60s; he is 48."

  10. Seamus Heaney was such a wonderful, caring, humanitarian as well as a great poet.
I have read his poetry all my life and it has been filled with such a quiet meditative incisiveness it calms the very soul.

  14. De Blasio might become mayor of NYC? So NY will have two in a row guys from Boston [area] serve as mayor? Bloomberg was born in St. Elizabeth's hospital in the Brighton section of Boston, and grew up in Allston [Boston], Brookline, and Medford. De Blasio is born and raised in Cambridge. These to guys couldn't be more dissimilar.

That Newfoundland 'bashing' sounds like another faux flag [I was going to use the F word, but...]. Mr. Blackburn needs to get a life.

Cocaine, ecstasy, and bleach don't combo very well.

  15. I'm sorry, but there's something somewhat fishy about David Hockney having a 23-year-old drug-taking "assistant." And how convenient that Hockney had left the house before the suicide occurred. Also, was he unable to find a mature, qualified, and non-drug-using person to actually perform the duties of an assistant? I suspect there's much more to this than is being said.
