British Diver Tom Daley: ‘I’m Not Gay’

2_daley

Tom Daley tells the UK Mirror he does not swim in the man pond:

"I think it’s funny when people say I’m gay… I laugh it off. I’m not. But even if I was, I wouldn’t be ashamed. It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest what people thought. But I can understand why I have a massive gay following – I spend most of my life half naked in trunks on a diving board showing off my bare chest. I often joke I wear more to bed than I do to work. But I’m cool with my gay following. It’s great to have gay fans even though my friends gently take the mick. I just think about my diving. If people think I am gay or that I don’t focus on my diving enough and go out too much, there is always going to be an opinion – and if I worry about that too much, then my diving goes downhill."

  1. Reality says

Good for this response! Shows he’s much more evolved and grown up than some of the adults in the sports world.

  2. Mary says

    Dear Tom sweetie,

The only one who doesn’t know you’re gay is you, hun. You’ll figure it out eventually.

    Signed,

    Reality

  3. yuninv says

Why does it matter what his sexual orientation is as long as he’s a nice, upstanding, supporting human being?

  4. Tigerama says

Sorry, but I find these comments grating. It’s nice that you cute boys are “cool” with it – and that it’s a lark to get hit on. The rest of us are actually gay, 24-7, and have to deal with the lesser, non party aspects.

  5. JWL says

I feel like an idiot. For some reason I thought he was an out and proud gay man. I must have misread something in the past.

  6. says

Gay or not, I’m never going to have him so it really means nothing to me either way. But I sure do enjoy looking at him.

  7. Joey Y says

It’s so embarrassing to me as a gay man when a nice but straight guy says he’s straight and my peers whine about how he must just be confused or lying. No better than those Exodus weirdos.

  8. Armando says

We should take him at his word unless anyone has experience to prove otherwise. Anybody? Seriously, I’d love to hear that story.

  9. Michael says

Give me a break. The boy couldn’t be gayer if he joined Exodus and started thumping his Bible while dating Taylor Swift.

  10. will says

Why are so many here so sexually frustrated they have to fantasize about a straight guy turning gay?

Please watch some porn and get it out of your system. Seriously. You guys say the same damn thing about every halfway decent looking straight guy the comes down the pike. It’s old. The jokes are stale. If you guys really MUST quip, new material is required.

  11. Booker says

I don’t really follow diving, so I must have missed something, but where did the idea that he even might be gay come from?

  12. RonCharles says

Who cares if he is gay or straight? He is a nice, young man who is supportive of the gay community. That is more than good enough!

  13. Shawn says

Like Peter Griffin says “Who the hell cares”. Gay men’s obssession with good looking guys’ sexuality is actually kind of sad.

  14. zach says

Why do these celebrities always have to qualify “I don’t care if people think I’m gay” with a “but I’m not”? Why not just a, “Oh the rumors that I’m gay, whatever.”

  15. Ray says

OMG! THEPOLARBEAST! I feel the very same way.

He’s adorable and talented and I know we should be doing the gay seems (read acts) gay but MAN I sure thought…think he’s a gaybie..

    No matter.

  16. Ryan says

Some guys are just a little flamboyant. While it wouldn’t’ have shocked me if he came out, I’m not shocked he’s straight either.

It was a nice, LGBT-friendly statement, especially to see a straight guy who knows he’s gawked at but doesn’t react insecurely because of it. He’s a good ally.

  17. JWL says

@SeanMaloney no, I definitely wrongly thought Daley was gay. There was so much talk about him on gay blogs during the Olympics that maybe I just assumed.

  18. Kari says

He should have just said “i’m straight”
i know he’s cool and everything but when you posit things in the negative, i.e. “oh im NOT GAY” it just lends to the idea that being non-gay is desirable or something…you know what i’m saying… we don’t say : I’M NOT STRAIGHT….just be yourself, don’t play off what YOU ARE NOT…talk about what you are..

    RIGHT?!

  19. William says

@Booker: He’s cute, expressive and energetic. Straight guys can have those qualities, but we expect them in gay guys.

  20. litper says

So many old queens who still have that “straight” fetish. If the guy comes out, he looses endorsments. It’s obvious. Just ask Matthew Mitcham.

  21. jamal49 says

Strange. I thought he was out. Did I miss something along the way. I guess it doesn’t matter anyway. I wish him well in his competitions. Stay focused, son. Go for the Gold.

  22. will says

You guys were all saying Ben Cohen was gay and Mackelmore was gay and every NFL football player who supported marriage equality was gay. And James Franco was gay and Prince Harry was gay… Everybody is gay or 3 beers will flip them.

This is a deranged fantasy. If they’re all gay and can flip that means we’re all straight and can get into vagina.

  23. NY2.0 says

Ughh, why are so many gay men desperate? Had Tom Daley been “not so good looking” the majority of you wouldn’t give a damn. As if any of us on here would’ve had a chance with him anyway.

  24. KC says

Posted one day earlier – a story about Ben Cohen. He’s not just “cool about his gay following” but has done a ton for LGBT causes. He’s never had to say, “I’m not gay,” doesn’t care about what people in the sports world think. He’s just who he is, and does what he does. And I respect the hell out of him for that. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m really pretty much over the whole Tom Daley thing.

  25. JohnAGJ says

Seems like a nice guy and of course he’s pleasant on the eyes. Gay or straight it makes no difference to me. I wish him well in his career and personal life.

  26. litper says

Obviously, Will never had anything with a “straight” guy and wants to keep his fantasy intact… And please do not drag real allies like Ben and Mackelmore who never had to scream “I’m not gay!” unlike this closeted little queen!

  27. Bill says

@zach: If people weren’t obsessed with celebrities’ sexual orientations, then a celebrity who really doesn’t care about the sexual orientation of people he or she meets (possible sex partners excepted) would not end up saying “I don’t care if people think I’m gay but I’m not.”

One reason for clearing it up is to make sure that the people he is sexually attracted to hit on him when he goes out for the evening, and for someone in his late teens to early twenties, that’s kind of important.

  28. Robert says

Sorry, that doesn’t ring true. My “Gaydar” is 99.99% accurate and everything about him screams gay – which is a good thing. Perhaps he is trying to get off the target list while in Russia. Come on out Tom, the water is fine!

  29. Den says

One of the things that annoys me in many comment about a certain celebrity ‘obviously being gay’ is the evidence cited about a degree of campness or effeminacy which is regarded as proof that a person cannot be straight. We argue rightly that gay men can be non-camp and would dismiss the naivity of anyone who claimed that someone was too ‘masculine’ to be gay , so why shouldn’t it work in reverse. Why do we find it hard to accept that a heterosexual man might also be camp or effeminate in any way.

  30. Mick says

I love Tom Daley. He is cool, sexy, open, and confident. I wish him much success and happiness, and the satisfying love and respect of another really hot, good person.

  31. Michael says

Wow, I am reading through these comments, I’m sorry, but if you can’t tell if Daley is gay, whether or not he wants to admit it, you really just need to go have your head checked because the boy is 110% gay.

And, no, this is hardly wanting some cute guy to be gay. This is seeing a duck that walks, talks and giggles like a duck and calling it out to be a duck.

  32. TANK says

I just can’t believe how gullible some of the pathetic, middle-aged queens around here are at times! This guy is so gay that he makes Ryan Seacrest seem tough and manly. Tank honestly doesn’t care if this guy is a self-hating closet case or if he truly believes he is straight… this guy just needs to realize that he can’t take his gay fans for granted. No self-respecting gay man should be a fan of Tom Daley after this latest phony press release! Just keeping it real, guys.

  33. Ben says

Well, he won’t be cut any slack here. Straight guys get more exposure than gay guys on this site. Dan Savage gets kind of stale.

  34. wheelie81 says

Why does that gay community stereotype so much and refuse to believe that not everyone they think is attractive is gay….only to complain about being stereotyped themselves?? If you want to be respected and treated equal while being gay, try being respectful of others’ heterosexuality!

  35. GET OVER IT says

For all of you who supposedly “KNOW” this man is gay. One question: Did you sleep with him? Again, this is why so many people do not like gays because you’re always trying to tell someone what he or she is. What HE IS, is a man who has the right to mind his own business and live a life without nosey queens pointing a finger!!!

  36. GET OVER IT says

And it’s his career, not yours!!! If he chooses to stay silent, it’s his business, not yours!

  37. gomez says

@den. i’m with you. i’ve met “softer” straight men before. mannerisms and whatnot can cut both ways. who cares. unless he’s lying. that would be weak. who knows.

  38. John says

Similar to what Oprah said after interviewing Lindsay Lohan (on the topic of her public and private struggles with addiction), I BELIEVE THAT HE BELIEVES THAT HE IS STRAIGHT. Which means that is what he believes in this moment in time. Maybe he is straight, maybe one day he will realize differently. We’ll see. In the meantime, he’s one gorgeous young man who I’ll never get to be with, but I can still fantasize about him.

  39. ann says

He is probably telling he truth, however, he is 19 and has not girlfriend yet. He says with diving he does not have the time. There plenty divers at level have girlfriends or are even married. Some of the that girlfriends are even around his age. he only kissed girls or anyway one when he was 14 and in Beijing for the olympics. He also had short lived girlfriend in 2011 who is a synchro Swimmer but fizzled out for one reason or another.

found this article after googling gay people think i’m gay…lol..i am female, over 50, in shape (extremely muscular)worked construction 20 years after being in tradition female jobs first 15 years of my working life..i constantly have to tell people i meet i am not gay or a man…so the comment about straight people don’t have to proclaim their straightness isn’t true.i see beautiful women but i am not sexually attracted to them..i have many masculine behaviors such as aggressiveness, rebelliousness, independence along with some female. sometimes people ask me if i’m a man because i am so ripped and not blessed with big boobs..i wish hormones was an option.anyway being from san francisco i don’t think of gay as a bad thing i just get tired of random fuckers being that rude to speculate on my sexuality or gender. my 30 year old son says i just have such a physical presence for my actual size 5’5′ and 140 lbs wearing a size 5/6 that i appear manly not womanly…along with my overbearing personality large hands and feet(size 10 womens shoes, size 10 ring) i have decided i am bi gender..women get angry with me because i often agree with the male outlook…ciao

  41. Dastius Krazitauc says

“I think it’s funny when people say I’m gay… I laugh it off.”

He had been in a relationship with a guy for several months when he said that, so why was it laughable for people to think he was gay?

  42. Mitch says

This story just showed up in the “Recommended for you” box on the Towleroad site. Might be time to update this story – or add the date of the story to the “Recommended for you” box. There seem to have been some developments since this story was first published!

  43. Michael says

Please update this story! It was fun to read the comments, though, in light of what we now know. I am glad Tom is now happy to identify as gay.

  44. JD says

Sexuality is not binary (hello–even gender turns out not to be binary). I’m gay-bi, meaning about 2% of women can crank me up, that’s 98% gay. If with a woman, people see me as straight–couldn’t be ore wrong. But I can’t honestly deny I am not 100% gay…but I regularly do (mostly because of the disdain and lack of acceptance of gays who insist on a binary position). It’s just a way of navigating in the world. I know, why not let this 19 year old have his progress his way?

  45. SpaceCadet says

It’s fun to come across these old articles where gay celebrities used to be straight!
