Orlando Cruz, First Openly Gay Boxer, Goes for Title Tonight, Weighs-In Wearing Rainbow Briefs: VIDEO

(via andres duque)

Orlando "Fenomeno" Cruz, the first openly gay pro boxer, has a shot at the WBO featherweight title Saturday in Las Vegas, USA Today reports:

2_cruz"For me, it doesn't matter," said Bob Arum, the Top Rank chairman and Hall of Fame promoter who put the fight on the undercard of the Tim Bradley-Juan Manuel Marquez main event Saturday at the Thomas & Mack Center (HBO pay-per-view, 9p.m. ET). "The only thing that matters to me is if he can throw punches. Anybody who makes an issue, 'Oh, he's gay, he shouldn't fight,' is stupid. A guy's or woman's sexual orientation is his or her own business."

Arum points out today's culture of embracing and supporting Cruz is vastly different from when Arum started his career half a century ago.

"If I put on a fight with (Cruz) then, there would be a thousand protesters saying it should be boycotted because it involved a boxer who had a different sexual orientation," Arum said during Thursday's news conference. "The world has changed, and it has changed for the better. Because it has changed for the better, we can all take pride in what is happening now."

Cruz wore rainbow briefs at the weigh-in and will wear rainbow colors in Saturday's fight.

Watch the weigh in, AFTER THE JUMP...

  3. I'd give Orlando Cruz the title and the prize for that beautiful body alone, in those sexy rainbow briefs. Wow-wow!!!
Go get 'em Orlando and Good Luck!

  6. I'm glad he came out, but coming out was enough. Parading around in rainbow colors is unnecessary overkill that is likely to turn people off, including other boxers.

Too many guys go overboard when they come out and un-do the good they did by coming out.

Just fight your fights and behave--and dress--the same way you did before you came out.....and you will have a much better effect on people.

  8. I love this guy.

@RICK, Cruz is more of a man in his rainbow trunks than you'll ever be; no matter what you wear.

  9. The trunks are over the top and fun. I wish him well! KO time.

  11. How does Rick know what this guy was or wasn't wearing before he came out?

  12. He has gotten some push back from some in Puerto Rico who think he is insulting the island for wearing a kilt with a customized Puerto Rican flag in which the bars have been replaced by the colors of the rainbow. The criticism comes mostly from people who also would rather have Orlando stay in the closet. Those briefs he wore at tonight's weigh-in seem to indicate he is not about to be intimidated by the criticism and that he will wear his colors tomorrow. In fact, Orlando already used a similar kilt back in March in Kissimmee, Florida. The mostly Latino public thought it was a hoot and cheered him on to victory. Here is some video of THAT fight...

  13. Ballsy. Go Orlando!!! Dios te acompañe

  14. I know it's supposed to be a fight and all, but I am secretly hoping it turns into a scene right out of a porn hot hot!

But if it doesn't, then I wish Orlando a good fight.

Psyching the other guy out with those rainbow briefs is a fantastic idea, too.

  18. This is the kind of activism that actually changes the world. This man is my hero.

  19. @ME: "tacky sit"

So your fantasy about Cruz involves a bit of syrup and the reverse cowboy position?

Not my thing, but whatever taps your maple tree.

If you're reading this, good luck tonight, Orlando.

  20. I think this is the opposite of tacky. It's called making a statement. Orlando Cruz is a gay man and a boxer and he's bringing the two worlds together with his gear. Sending a message that is extremely powerful...a gay man in the ring, fighting for the world title. How amazing, breaking all stereotypes and walls down.

    Good luck tonight Orlando!

  21. Knock 'em out Orlando!

    Posted by: dh | Oct 12, 2013 10:19:24 AM

  22. @RICK I dare you to say that to Orlando Cruz' face. Honestly, I don't think you're man enough.

Y espero que ganes esta noche Orlando que te realices tu sueno de ser el campeon. Dios te bendiga papito. Suerte!!

  23. I think it's great. He's Puerto Rican as I am and we like loud, vibrant colors. It's how we roll. LOL On a separate but related note, given that it appears that a lot of the anti-gay crimes are being perpetrated by misguided Latino young males this BOLD statement is needed. You're a pioneer in breaking through the Latino machismo culture. It is a daunting task, but these are courageous first steps and every little bit helps. You are already a winner in my book. All the best to you, Orlando C.

  24. @RICK-TROLL;

So now you are the fashion police? I bet you shop for xxl's at Walmart, because anyone so jealous of the lives of Gays and Lesbians like you must be a pathetic low-class loser with a big mac in one hand and a Walmart catalog with a bottle of lube in the other.

Poor lil' Ricktroll; Sitting in his hi-chair in fwont of his compooter, whining about all the fabulous Gays stuff he can never-evuh-evuh dooo.

    And then there's this...repeated for repeat's sake;

Orlando Cruz would knock you into tomorrow with one half-punch if you said a third of the crap you say here about us LGBTs.

You must be miserable in your world. Poor poor Loser.

  25. I wanted to qualify my statement in CAPS about anti-gay hate crimes by saying "it appears that a lot of the anti-gay HATE crimes IN NYC are being perpetrated...
