Gay Filmmaker John Greyson and ER Doctor Tarek Loubani Freed by Captors in Egypt

John Greyson and Dr.Tarek Loubani, who have been detained in Egypt and held in horrid condidtions since August 16, when they were held during violent anti-government protests in Cairo, have been freed, the AP reports:

Greyson_loubani“I look forward to Dr. Loubani and Mr. Greyson being reunited with their families and friends, who have shown tremendous strength during this difficult time,” Lynne Yelich, a junior minister responsible for consular affairs said in a statement late Saturday.

Mr. Greyson and Mr. Loubani were released Sunday morning — Cairo time — but there has been no confirmed word on exactly when they will be returning to Canada.

There was no immediate comment on their release from the two men’s families.

Mr. Greyson, a Toronto filmmaker and Mr. Loubani, an emergency room doctor from London, Ont. have said they planned to stay in the Egyptian capital only briefly on their way to Gaza last month.

Friends and family have been campaigning for their release and last week published a letter written by the men from the jail where they were being held. It described their arrest and the beatings they endured.

  1. This is what happens when you assosiate with the Islamic barbarians

  2. Why do people like this put themselves in such obviously dangerous situations and locales to begin with? How much effort and $ was required to free them? They should foot the bill, the same way people who go hiking minus adequate knowledge and gear, get lost, and require an expensive and dangerous rescue effort.

  3. Rat, honey, read up on why they were there. Your response is probably why you've gone nowhere with your life.

  4. I've known John for many years and greatly admire his work, particularly his AIDS musical "Zero Patience" and his ever-timely "Moscow Does Not Believe in Queers" John was in Egypt with Tarek on their way to Gaza to treat civilian casualties of recent unrest. He cares about the world -- a notion that is anathema to the likes of "Ratbastard" and the other trolls who squat and defecate on this site.

  5. They are terrorist supports and should have been left to rot in prison

  8. I admire Mr. Greyson, who I assume has strongly condemned the treatment of gays and lesbians in Gaza. Though I can't seem to find any of his condemnations of Hamas' policies toward gay and lesbian Palestinians.

  9. @Mark,

Perhaps you assume too much? Is Mr. Greyson one of those "progressives" who follows the party line, emphasizing western, especially American, malfeasance, and Israeli, but de-emphasizes "oppressed" people's malfeasance. There's a lot of those types among the more hardcore "advocates".

I stand by my previous post 100%: How much $ did their freedom cost?

  11. Too bad they have been radicalized....

  12. @Lee: the problem was not "Islamic barbarians." In case you don't remember, the military ousted a president who was a member of a political party with close ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. You'll have to blame what happened in this case on secular barbarians.

  13. For hell sake, they went to a very dangerous place on purpose. That's called stupid. But I am immensely relieved that they have gotton out of prison.

  14. somehow they'll find a way to blame Israel
