Would You Let This Man Sleep on Your Shoulder on the Subway? — VIDEO

Subway

The start-up Charidy decided to find out:

Inspired by a picture that went viral, we decided to see how many people would let a random person sleep on them on the subway. Here are the results, and the valuable lesson we learned.

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

As Mashable notes, the idea has been tested before, in July:

  3. I don't think it is purely a factor of how kind or not people are to strangers. Some people don't mind being touched, some people welcome it, and others don't like being touched.

  7. In 55 years of life one of my fondest memories was of a young man that got onto a Greyhound bus and curled up next to me, slept on my shoulder, even had one his legs over top of mine, it was an incident I wish all of life could be like.

  8. The miracle is how anyone can fall asleep on a subway ride.

  9. The folks that allowed him their shoulders to sleep on were charming and humane. I let a man sleep on my shoulder one night at the all-night porn theater on 13th street. He also kept his hand on my thigh as he slept. It's one of the most tender memories of my life.

  14. Very sweet. My favorite was the woman who put his hat back on his head. I also liked the guy who smiled and did a "Well, why not?" gesture. :-)

  16. It has happened to me on occasion. I've never had any bad incident.

Once, as I was taking the train home from work, this guy entered the train at the next stop from where I had boarded and sat next to me. Within a couple of minutes, he had fallen asleep and began to lean into me and then his head dropped on my shoulder.

He slept soundly all through the trip from Manhattan to Queens, and when we got several stops into Queens, there was this moment that he awoke with a start. When he realized he had been sleeping against my shoulder, he apologized profusely. I looked at him and said, "That's OK, brother. You can lean on me."

Surely not the most original thing to say to anyone in that situation. His face reddened but at that moment, we must have pulled into his subway station because he arose quickly to exit the train. Right as the subway door opened, he stopped, turned around, came back to me, leaned over, kissed me my on top of my head, gave me a small embrace and softly said, "God bless you", and left.

Then, it was my turn to be embarrassed as my face turned very red!

  18. It's not that hard to sleep on the subway. I wouldn't do it now, but when I was a penniless student, it was a no big deal. Don't think I ever leaned on anyone, though.

  19. I'd be kinda uncomfortable. You gotta admit, a lot of guys wouldn't let another guy sleep on their shoulder because of how it looks - not how uncomfortable they are.

  20. @ "I wouldnt let someone sleep on my shoulder,..."

Well, what about on your butt--would that be ok?

    Hee, hee, hee.

I'm sorry, Mark. I couldn't help it. I'm just a devious old queen.
