Two Men Attacked in Brutal Anti-Gay Hate Crime at Oregon Hot Springs: VIDEO

Two men were beaten at Bagby Hot Springs outside Portland, Oregon between midnight and 1 am on the morning of Tuesday, December 2, PQ Monthly reports. The attack happened after Portland-area resident Mik Holland and a friend engaged two men in conversation and the subject of sexual orientation came up.

WoundHolland and his friend were then attacked and bludgeoned with an industrial flashlight before the attackers fled. The men were transported to an area hospital where Holland received 15 stitches.

KGW reports:

Mik is bisexual, his friend is gay. “It left me feeling uncomfortable…where the conversation was going,” Holland said.

Holland said he left the tubs and only came back when he thought the men were gone, but they soon returned.
“When I turned my head, that’s when he took a flashlight and hit me over my head three times,” Holland said.

The attackers were said to have Eastern European accents.

The suspects have been described as a 27-year-old white male with short blond hair, 5 ft., 7 in., tall and 180 lbs. His name may be Alex. The second suspect is 6 ft., 1 in., tall male about 200 lbs. His name may be Jay.

The police have the flashlight and are analyzing it.

Said Lieutenant Robert Wurpes of the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office to PQ Monthly:

“Talking about it in plain speech, this was a hate crime. However, while  do have a hate crime [classification] — Intimidation — the officer wrote it up [in the police report] as assault in the second degree. Assault in the second degree carries heavier fines and penalties than intimidation in the first degree, which may have been why the officer listed those charges.” Lieutenant Wurpes notes that, if they are able to find the suspects, the District Attorney will be able to tack on more charges, possibly including Intimidation.

  2. This is the legacy of hate mongering "christian" organizations. They all have blood on there hands. I don't understand why they aren't listed as terrorist organizations with leadership rounded up and prosecuted for crimes against humanity.

  3. @SHANNON: Jump to conclusions often?

  4. My (ex)partner and I used to go to Bagby on Christmas Day. It was always especially nice when it would snow while we were in the hot tubs.

Last time we went, we turned around in the parking lot because someone had smashed the windows of each of the dozen or so cars in the parking lot.

  5. Portland has a lot of russian and east europeon immigrants. For some reason, liberals wanted them to live in the USA. Probably because liberals are homophobic.

  6. Here's a tip:

Most Eastern Europeans, men and women, are not as accepting and certainly not as P.C. as most Western Europeans and North Americans. This is especially true for Russians, in funeral, a VERY aggressive people. I'm sorry if this offends some people, but it's my observation from many years of much experience. They simply haven't evolved in a healthy manner the way their western neighbors have. I assume this is because of their tragic history with wars and dictatorships. Also, of course, the orthodox church is extremely anti-gay and president for life Putin is using hate for gays to rally his country around an anti-western attitude.

  7. I should add Ukrainians along with Russians. The have very similar attitudes and mannerisms.

  8. @Ratbastard said "They simply haven't evolved in a healthy manner the way their western neighbors have."

Why do gays always have to wait for their lower cousins to evolve? Clinton had to evolve to gay rights. Obama had to evolve to gay rights. Christie is slowly evolving.

Gays are literally waiting for evolution to occur!

  9. @KEV C: If liberals are "homophobic" as you say, why is it that liberals in the Congress and State Legislatures are the ones proposing and voting for bills that favor equality for LGBT people?

  10. Andrew: Just ignore KEV C aka RICK. He just posts stupid comments to get everyone in a tizzy. He is a troll.

  11. Andrew, are these the same people who are supporting immigration reform so every homophobe in the world can be your neighbor? Every Muslims who wants to hang you, every Somali who wants to imprison you, every Russian who wants to bash your skull in can live next door to you? Yeah, that's sooo progressive. Seems like these representatives are confused, stupid, or intentionally deceitful. Primivites waiting to evolve .. in Congress no less!

  12. The Russian pigs think they can force their backwards culture on the US. Time to stand up and fight! This is the goal of right-wingers here...time to get the head out of the sand and fight back.

  13. @KEV C: Your categorization of Immigration Reform is incorrect and hysterically exaggerated, as are most of the things you post on this site. Surely you know that what you posted above is just hysterical ranting and has no basis in fact.

  14. Yet another example of the violence that would be a thing of the past if gay people armed themselves. I'm no gun nut, but why go unarmed and defenseless and get your head bashed? The bashers are armed. Why shouldn't we gays be armed? You don't have to use a gun, just get properly trained in self-defense and legally carry a weapon in certain circumstances and places. We gays must stop accepting the violence others inflict on us. Fight back, kick ass. The bashers won't stop themselves. Only we can put an end to bashing by not letting ourselves get bashed ever again.

  15. @RK: Isn't the goal of "right wingers here" to keep LGBT people as second class citizens without the same rights and opportunities as heterosexual people?

    Posted by: andrew | Dec 11, 2013 10:38:13 PM

  16. Andrew, a gay man was violently bashed in the head for no reason by an apparently foreign-born homophobe. You may want to ask, how did a violent foreigner get here, who let them in to this country? And why are these foreign bigots always living in Democrat districts where they are welcomed by liberals and progressives as neighbors?

    Posted by: Kev C | Dec 11, 2013 11:49:09 PM

  17. I am not one to speculate, but it sure seems funny that these guys would be chatting up 2 hunky Russians in a hot tub. Maybe they were looking to get roughed up?

Posted by: Derrick From Philly | Dec 12, 2013 12:29:58 AM

  18. This is a hate crime pure and simple. It is NOT beyond the pale to say the a majority of the Eastern European immigrants in Oregon are anti-gay. All you had to do is go to the hearings on 2006 in Salem. They are mostly right-wing lemmings

    Posted by: Jumper | Dec 12, 2013 12:41:55 AM

  19. Russia was mostly peasants still in the Middle Ages plus a more educated European leaning aristocracy when the revolution happened in 1917. Communism froze out all cultural influences, as much as it could, from the evolving West, while instituting a new controlling class plus corruption. The only way for most people to get anything was bribes and favors to the controlling class. So now, it and its former satellites where the same thing was going on are left as corrupted racist sexist anti-gay peasants in an extremely corrupt society. Not everyone of course. Most of them.

The primary value of a lot (again, not all) of Russian immigrants is to flaunt their wealth with cars and tacky clothes and gold while scamming the welfare system for whatever they can get and chugging vodka while treating their wives like dirt.

Gross generalizations I know, but then I live in a neighborhood in Brooklyn with a lot of them, near neighborhoods with even more. I may be a bit prejudiced after suffering for three years with Russian neighbors from hell right above my apartment.

  20. @KEV C: Try defending your comment that liberals are homophobes, in the face of the FACT that it is liberals in Congress and the State Legislatures who propose and vote for laws supporting equality for LGBT people.

    Posted by: andrew | Dec 12, 2013 1:16:31 AM

  21. Liberal policies have resulted in increased homophobic violence and discrimination. It's fair to say that this result is because liberals are homophobic.

Some ingnorant people, gays included, don't care about violence and discrimination against gays. They only care about gay marriage, and are easily appeased when some politician give them some crumbs, some table scraps, dresses in gay political drag and marches in a pride parade or supports gay marriage. Meanwhile, gays are being beaten up or unemployed in their district because everyone thinks liberals are pro-gay when in fact they are not.

When Democrats can lower their gay bashing rates to below Republicans, then gays should consider supporting them. Not before. Currently, more gays are bashed and discriminated against in Dem districts. But at least they can marry and vote for Democrats.

  22. KEV C; It isn't Liberals that have created this animus, you moron;

It is right wing Christian Churches. Amercian or otherwise.

Get YOUR house in order pal, before YOU start slinging mud at 'Liberals'

Geez, sometimes I wish the stoopid could buy themselves a box of Smarty-oh's.

Cause that Kev C? He could use a truck-load.

  23. KEV C: The fact that you refuse to defend your post that liberals are homophobic, in the face of the REALITY that liberals in Congress and the State Legislatures are the people who propose and vote for laws that support equality for LGBT people shows that your rantings are just that: empty rhetoric. Stop avoiding the question. Answer it.

    Please Don't Feed the Troll.

    Posted by: NwYrkr | Dec 12, 2013 8:58:51 AM

  25. @NWYRKR: I realize that KEV C is nut case, but nut cases should be challenged. Never let their nonsense go unchallenged. EXPLAIN THIS KEV C: When the U.S. Senate passed ENDA(Employment Non-Discrimination Act)by a vote of 64-32, all 32 NO votes were cast by Republicans. The only Democrat not voting for ENDA was Bob Casey of Pa, a co-sponsor of the bill, who was with his wife in the hospital for heart surgery. Only a fool or a flat out liar doesn't know that the democrats, liberals and centrists, are the ones leading the fight for EQUALITY FOR LGBT PEOPLE.
