Laverne Cox 'Deeply Moved' by Reaction to Her Katie Couric Appearance

Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox, whose interview with Katie Couric this week made headlines after Cox steered Couric away from a discussion of "private parts" toward one about identity, discrimination, and anti-violence, expressed gratitude on her Tumblr today for being able to elevate the conversation:

CoxI am so deeply moved by the dialogues that are happening around my appearance with Carmen Carrera on “The Katie Show” on Monday.  It is my dream that by highlighting the deep humanity of trans people’s lives in the media, elevating actual trans voices to speak the truth of our lived experiences in ways that don’t sensationalize and objectify us, those human voices and stories can be a part of the disruption needed to end the disproportionate injustices that threaten so many trans people’s lives, particularly the lives of trans women of color.   It is a state of emergency for far too many trans people across this country.  The stories of women like Islan Nettles and CeCe McDonald are far too commonplace in our community.  I look forward to engaging in more dialogues about the complicated intersectional issues around these injustices and ways to make them a thing of the past.  I am so grateful to Katie Couric and her show for the opportunity to highlight these important issues.

  1. She has amazing presence and grace. I can't wait to see what she gets to do in the second season of Orange is the New Black.

Laverne can whip your pale flat azz, Rick...with one arm tied behind her back.

Give it a try. Go out on the street tonight and insult a Transwoman. Black, White, Latino or Asian...she'll whup yo' azz.

  5. Engage, Laverne, engage—you've obviously got the brains and courage to do this. Brava!

Is Rick posing as Derrick now ? As Derrick's first comment is SO un-Derrick-like…

  6. And Rick, don't think that getting yourself all dolled up and becoming "Enchantra" before you hit the streets is going help. Those girls will whup yo' azz.

  7. I tend to agree with the second Derrick From Philly. A "trans woman" is likely to resort to violence in the face of an insult. Think CeCe McDonald. This is why so many of them are or have been incarcerated.

As for this story, it has nothing to do with gay people. There is no such thing as LGBT.

  8. Yes, TINKERBELLE. He's scared of Little Kiwi and so he picks on me. F.ckin' bully.

Oh, and I meant to say "LatinA" F.ckin' Rick (after midnight known as "Enchantra") distracted me.

And give up the platinum blonde wig when you become Enchantra, Rick. You aint no Jean Harlow, honey. More like Michael Caine in "Dressed To Kill".

  9. MIKE, MIKE, Michael:

If you'd have been harassed, ridiculed, spat upon and beaten from the time you first expressed your NATURAL self as a child--you might be constantly on alert to protect yourself also.

It's the courage of Tranwomen (and Transmen) that I admire. LOL and I've even been on the wrong receiving end of that courage a couple of times. It was my fault...I think.

  10. Laverne Cox is a class act and Katy Couric is a wench for going for the lowest common denominator in that interview. You deserve praise, Laverne, for keeping your cool and for your graciousness and intelligence. God bless you.

  11. @Derrick — well, now someone is posting as Enchantra in other posts. You've started a new trend. Now nobody knows who anyone is… although I still recognize your personal voice.

Need a course in HR to navigate this blog.

  12. I wish more time had been allotted to the interview, because genitalia is an entirely valid topic to discuss, and the issues of safety and discrimination demand discussion as well. One shouldn't have to come at the expense of the other.

  13. She is a very good spokesperson for the trans community.

  14. Derrick from Philly:

Whether oppression drives them violently mad or whether that madness comes as part of a package with gender identity disorder, we can agree on one thing: Transfolk are very violent in comparison to the general population.

While you might be happy to be on the receiving end of such violence, LGBs who have a modicum of regard for their own safety as well as the safety of others will not tolerate it. As trans activist violence against LGBs continues to grow, we will see more LGBs demand that law enforcement move against violent trans activists.

  15. Is the ability to "whup your ass" really the measure of a transsexual woman's legitimacy? And doesn't this ability, apparently imparted on all transsexual women, betray their underlying masculine physiology?

  16. CeCe McDonald pled guilty to murder. Why is she a victim?

Yes she was attacked unjustly and she responded like an aggressive male and murdered her attacker and pled guilty to that crime.
