Openly Gay Footballer Anton Hysen Signs with U.S. Team

Hysen

Anton Hysen, the Swedish footballer who came out of the closet in 2011, has signed with the fourth division team Myrtle Beach Mutiny, he reported on Instagram.

Writes Outsports:

So an openly gay professional soccer player will be playing in South Carolina. Their division features teams across the Southeast. Not only is it supposed to be "impossible" for a professional male athlete to be openly gay, but it's "100% definitely impossible" to do it in South Carolina, Tennessee, George and the like. Yet Myrtle Beach is doing it. Not so impossible, I guess.

Said Hysen: "I am excited to be joining the Mutiny this season. This is a great opportunity for me on a personal and professional level. I hope I can help take the team to the top of the NPSL."

  1. Good for him. The more openly gay professional athletes the better. One day his sexuality won't even be mentioned and we'll be wondering, is he or isn't he? :-)

  3. It's not really a breakthrough if you think about it. I think accepting openly gay players will become the norm in sports where not a lot of physical contact is required.

  5. @BANDANAJACK - that would be awesome! Like so many gay people, gay athletes are just better players.

@CARY - I saw your Naked Bike Ride video, isn't that a bit racy for YouTube or was I watching the uncensored version? I was at Ghirardelli Square yesterday and suddenly a big crowd noise, I peered over the rail onto Jefferson Street and OMG! From above there must have been 50-70 men and women riding bicycles stark naked! No shame whatsoever! Laughing and waving! Thanks for the video. (I hope you don't mind but I downloaded it for repeated viewing! LOL!)

  6. Given that your blog is written in the U.S. and that he is joining a U.S. team and that the source that you quote that reported on this referred to him as a "soccer player" why don't you refer to him as a soccer player, too, instead of as a "footballer"?

  11. I assume the South Carolina republicans who slashed funding for colleges recommending books with gay themes are not going to like this!

  17. Bill: to be fair you are the only ones who call this sport soccer for the rest of the world this is football

In soccer there's a lot of contact, maybe not as much as in basketball or handball, but there's contact

I didn't even know the U.S. had a fourth division. Hopefully this is a first step toward getting into MLS.

  22. Though I know that I am supposed to admire him for his intelligence and his integrity in being an openly-gay athlete, I still have to say, "He is one beautiful man!"
